While they haven't been soldiers for "that long" remember that there was a HUGE time skip between when they broke down the wall and them joining the military. Reiner and Bertholdt were young children when they broke down wall Maria. Reiner says it in an earlier ep "We were just kids then, we didn't know what we were doing". That in itself had a massive impact on his psyche, and him assuming a new identity was part of how he coped. His time in the military just helped flesh that alternate self out even more. As for the memory loss theres a very real name for it, it's called dissociative amnesia. It can take whole chunks of memory and a lot of people with ptsd / cptsd have it.

Lex

It's not losing memories, it's more like schizophrenia, you will figure out eventually, AOT will spread tiny informations that maybe doesn't make sense until everything is revealed.

Namende

Reiner is by far the best written character, it'll all make so much sense...

The another person taken by colossal titan with Ymir , was like the scout who was guarding her at this time. I mean the person who was escorting her while all that mess up . That’s the why she is the only one with then when they escape with eren .

The moment they showed, where Reiner broke was during the series. In the second attack on the walls, the battle of Trost. Reiner, Bertholdt and Annie saw Marco getting eaten in front of them and that was seemingly the final thing that broke Reiner.

Barry

Titans were probably chasing Annie to attack her, but then saw easier targets in the humans.

Some0neElse

The thing with Reiner is that you have to keep in mind these few things. He is around same age as Eren which makes him about 12yo when he broke the wall. Also the weight of having to act as a soldier pushed him into developing a split personality. It will become more clear why exactly this happened in later episodes

SalVader

The other person that the colossal titan took besides Ymir was a random scout for the ODM gear. When they had transformed neither of them had the maneuver gear. This episode specifies that one was taken off Eren and Reiner is wearing it. So the other one came from the other scout that he scooped up.

Ranol

You're right about the pronunciation, but Bert's name it's hard for almost eveveryone, so most of the fandom just calls him Bert lol

Clotilde Ries

When they say that the Female Titan was "leading" the other Titans, it doesn't mean that she had control over them. They could just be chasing her to eat her. She just played prey to lure the titans to the scouts who would be their next targets.

Cilius 777

All ill say is you're gonna wait a while for the questions in this ep to be answered but all the little hints will fall in place and make sense eventually

Aiskuriimuneko

Ymir said the Beast titan was responsible for the Titans appearing within Wall Rose, that Reiner and Bert clearly recognized the Beast Titan and that the only way they can go home again is through that person.

JJ SPILLER05

Reiner isnt looking to kill the beast titan, he wants to find it and join it back to their "home land"

Liam Argent

You should watch episode 11 and 12 together on Saturday. They really are 1 big episode. Treat yourself.

Dethrox

hmm pretty sure you read that part about the beast titan wrong :D all i can say..

AngelGxbriel

So many questions, that can't be answered, apart from that random person, they are irrelevant. Just had odm gear for Bert to use

Martin Vaclavik

the "other person" Bertholt had in his mouth is not important! Bert just took their ODM gear, that's the whole point... without ODM, that person was probably then eaten by the titans that we saw at the bottom of the wall inside the crater Colossal made with his explosion

Richard Wheeler

Ymir was assuming the Beast Titan is on Reiner and Bertholdt's side. She said if they "get to" the Beast Titan, then they can go home, which means the Beast Titan can get them there safely. She also hinted that she is assuming that when she said they were staring at the Beast Titan with stars in their eyes, or in other words, in admiration. This is exactly what I assumed they were saying in their vague conversations, which they're keeping vague to not give information to Eren and Reiner and Bertholdt to not give any more information to Ymir than she already knows. AoT likes to sprinkle bits of information so that later it'll all come in full circle and all the puzzle pieces will come together! None of this is spoilers at all, just what you can assess by everything they're saying. Everything's based on assumptions since we, the viewers, are going to learn mostly at the same pace as Eren/the Scouts since they're the protagonists of the show

Stoke me a clipper

There is so much info in this episode you won't appreciate until later. "Within the walls" also doesn't mean actually inside the wall itself, she meant titans rose up from within/behind the walls.

Richard Wheeler

Also, I take Reiner's condition as closer to bipolar personalty disorder that occurred to keep him emotionally balanced from Ymir's comments! Schizoprenia is close enough though and usually personality disorders stem from schizophrenia

syaimaral

Without spoiling anything and clarifying a few points, ymir was saying monkey man was assessing the strength or defense of the survey corps. She also said Bernie Sanders and Roaring Reinhard looked at monkey man with shock and recognition. She is insinuating they know monkey man and monkey man is from this same mysterious hometown they are all from. They are hoping monkey man will be their savior that rescues the damsel in distress (imagine Reinhard in a dress). Also there is no hole in the walls, so the only logical conclusion is the titans did not come from the outside, but the inside somehow.

Anders Pike

Much more like PTSD than schizophrenia. I see a lot of people misread what Ymir is saying about Reiner. He didn't develop a second personality or anything, she's saying he was so guilty about what he did that he suppressed the memories of his sins. As a result, sometimes he remembers what he's supposed to be doing and other times he doesn't so just acts like the soldier he's been pretending to be. There is no fantasy style good Reiner/evil Reiner. It's always just him, plus or minus certain memories. His actual personality isn't changing.

2024-01-14 21:07:04 you misunderstand the part with the beast titan, they said within the wall and about the personality of Reiner, you have to imagine the crime he committed and the pressure of being infiltrated for 5 full years

Luke, you know the movie the Departed? Think of it this way in terms of Reiner. You got a cop that becomes a cop to be a better criminal to help a crime syndicate and you have a Criminal that is an undercover cop. Both get so consumed in their fake worlds that they lose face with what their reality is.

Hayden Steele

reiner basically attempted genocide. the explanation fits

DarkWulf40

Ymir said that the beast titan raised titans from within the walls. By that she meant they were raised from within the confines of the walls and not the walls themselves.

Alif GT

it said the beast titan raised the titan within the walls not inside the walls, what are you? blind?

Juli

schizophrenic? that is not at all what reiner is. not even close how did u come up with that. what he has is more multiple personality. also you really need to be more patient

Markus

You pronounced Bertolt's name correctly :D

CyanicG

really gotta be more patient man. you really expect there gonna tell you exactly why reiner and bert did everything they did the second after the reveal? the information in this show is slowly revealed as you figure it out for yourself, theres no way you think that just telling you why everything happened immediately after would be good storytelling

Daddelzeit

"I miss Levi" We all do 😣 One of the best written characters of the whole show and a badass figher too

Karman Wilmot

What!? You think it's the worst? You must not like character development or important info dumps and just like action then. Smh

Natasha Sullivan

Luckily theres a lot of levi next season

Flair

The second person is probably dead. He took Ymir because shes a titan, but the second guy he took was just for the ODM gear. Thats where Bertholt gets his gear from. Only Eren had ODM gear on out of the four of them, but suddenly both Reiner and Bertholt have gear. Its unclear if Bert swallowed the other guy and somehow stole the gear that way, or if he just took it off his body after he comes out the collosal.

ThePaleBlood

everytime this dude pauses i lose braincells

Zdmn

It's not the first time I realize how hard it is for you to understand basic human emotions and traumas. Mental health is something more people should be aware of. If you think Reiner's split personality doesn't add up to you then I don't know what will. Aren't his sins and traumas of seing people he'd made (even relatively false) connections with get eaten in front of his eyes enough to break someone mentally? Even at this stage, and I've never watched this series til the end so I don't even know what happens next, I can tell that even if Reiner's backstory is a mystery you can definitely see that they're human beings and even if their fight is right and we simply do not understand it yet, doesn't mean we can't understand basic human emotions and internal conflicts such acts would create. For the sake of example: if you had the possibility to go back in time to kill Hitler as a baby. You'd probably do it, but does it mean it'd be easy or that you would escape that experience unscathed? Isn't that basic 101 human psychology? I guess I'm a true empath but I really don't get how people can get confused at this either. Ofcourse it adds up.

Voolfina

Lol what is with the attitude? Is it really that unthinkable that someone might think that his way of acting is because of something else other than trauma? For all we know it might be someone or something that is altering his mind. Idk i just think its weird to shit on someone for not instantly thinking someones way of acting is caused på trauma or mental disorders, especially in a series like this when a lot of weird shit is going on.

Voolfina

Why pay money to watch this guy react to something and then complain about how he reacts. I prefer him pausing instead of talking over the video and potentially missing important details. Or to save all his questions until the end would basically be just watching someone silently watch a series, which at that point it just makes more sense to watch the episode alone in fullscreen instead of havings someones face take up 80% of the screen, if you don't care about what he has to say.

B. Kelly

Reiner has ptsd (:
