"It's a bit strange to worship the walls considering humans built them" that's literally every religion ever

Von Yoosten

The Translation was actually very accurate and literal.

ArtKi

It sounds like Titans and the Walls appeared at about the same time. VERY VERY SUS.

ShoePlum

I'm super curious to know if you've watched the Levi special episodes. They're not part of the main series but are some chapters that got cut out of the manga, so they made a little mini series on it in the anime, and it goes a bit further into Levi's past.

alex averbuh

As far as I'm aware the line should be "who"

Juli

who do you think the real enemy is. but what also kinda works i guess. what is the enemy? remember when eren was being questioned by that scared captain with all the canons pointed at him. he asked eren what are you human or titan. so i can see both who and what working for the translation.

Ray Quigs

It's an ambiguous question made to make Eren, and us, think about what he meant.

Rich

i've seen people say the "what" is the correct translation and is what erwin was truly asking. there's definitely a difference between asking "who" the enemy is versus "what" they could be. makes it more of an interesting and mysterious question anyway with the hint that it could be something you don't expect.

Jonesy

i think people have already said but the no regrets ova goes into detail on levi's backstory. i think its part 4 and 5 of the ova series. its placed somewhere in season 1 part 2 so you can watch it whenever really.

Thomas Juino

Luke, there's 2 special AOV episodes on Levi backstory and how Erwin brought him in the survey corps !! Amazing episodes !! Attack on Titan - No regrets 1&2

Elias Austin

Make sure either someone gives you the list or you look up the list of the order to watch the entire AOT series in. There’s OVA’s in between each of the seasons. Loving the reactions man ❤️

Elias Austin

DEATH NOTE for surrrre next. Entry for a lot of people into the anime world. AoT and Death Note are top of my list easy

Hayden Steele

i believe the line is "who do you think the enemy is?"

Mawgy

Just adding my voice in here for you to please watch the OVA's. Levi's back story (well, PART of his history) is available in the 'no regrets' 2 parter. (More of his past is revealed in season 3). There's another which touches on a few things learnt so far- Uluo and his copying of Levi, Hanji wanting to capture a Titan, Survey corps and their missions outside the walls, and the titan that made exploring the potential of capturing a titan worthwhile. You *NEED* to watch this one, if only for one word to be mentioned. (no joke, a SINGLE word). There's another which is a side-mission/training exercise for the 104th cadet corps that happened prior to their graduation. It doesn't add to the main storyline, but does give more depth to the characters, how they interact with each other, and personal growth from being a cadet 'yes sir' type to being more team oriented and independent thinkers as situations evolve outside the norm. There's an amusing side-story about Jean and his mum/upbringing and a competition between him and Sasha. Again, doesn't add to the main storyline, but a little humour between all the traumatic episodes doesn't hurt. There is an alternative timeline 'what if' style storyline featuring Eren and Mikasa, how they met and their childhood. There is another OVA which you haven't quite reached yet (most of it will be safe to watch before the end of this season, but the opening scene kinda gives away something not explored in full until season 3, so might be best to wait until later to watch this one). Again, it doesn't add anything to the main storyline either, but does explore a certain character's motivations/thought processes/etc. (it's a 2 parter). There's 8 OVA's in total- 6 of which are safe for you to watch now :) (well, 8 OVA episodes; 6 storlines since two of them are 2-parters)

Mawgy

As for Erwin, in the dubbing it's translated as "What is it you think you see? Who do you think the real enemy is here? Ignore me; loaded question." Please Luke- would love to hear your answers to these questions.

MAH1RO

Well, you should already be used to questions you can't answer yet when you've come so far in AOT :D

Horizonshard

If you do a different anime soon, I would love to see you explore the lighter romance side of anime, to see if you'd like it. I recommend Your Lie In April.

Vick Ramos

If you want to do another show or for the show you should do after AOT I would highly recommend Demon Slayer!

curlboy4 _20sito

keep it up man, love the reactions and i cant wait for you to see other animes!!

Anonymous

Just a heads up for the future, don't skip the ending song of season 3 episode 12 it has a scene in the middle.

Chalupasaurus Rex

You should do tokyo ghoul or Psycho Pass or demon slayer or One Punch Man

Daniel Musgrave

eh slightly disagree there, i think the episode after is better without seeing that beforehand cause its kind of a preview rather than an extra scene

Daddelzeit

Something about the cleaning thing: It's very common in japan to care about that. Schools are usually cleaned by the students and even in Red Light Districts, there are days the workers go on the streets to clean them together. Even with nearly no trash cans on the streets, there's no litter, because the japanese take their empty bottles back home.

Jinrocker

AOT as a best anime? I can see it maybe making a top 50 list, but I don't think it would even come close to a top 25, let alone a top 10, at least for anyone that has spent a significant amount of time with anime. Don't get me wrong, it's a good show, but in the world of anime, there is PLENTY that are far better.

Paldrun

That is personal opinion for some it could be the best.

Samir Larras

Maybe a top 50? Your tastes must be very different from mine then. For me it would make a top 50 no problem.

Wolfi

Tell me your top 10 if I am to believe you are doubting SNK as "maybe top 50" XD Even if you didn't like the ending it's only 10% of the series and does not deserve to be thrown that low

Jinrocker

@ Paldrun Best is a quantifiable statement, not one of opinion. Someone could say that AOT is the show they most enjoyed, and I take no issue with that, but to call it the best (or close) is something that exists outside the realm of opinion. Objective measures regarding plot, characterization, pacing, composition, scoring, animation, originality, and cultural impact all play a part in determining things like 'best'. While I enjoy AOT quite a lot, there are some issues with the series (especially when you get towards the end) that place it far enough down the list as to remove it from contention for a title like this. To reiterate, that doesn't invalidate anyone's enjoyment of the series, or make it a bad show, it just doesn't reach the bar when discussions over what the best anime of all time might be.

Jinrocker

@Oliwia Sure, however, to try to level the playing field as best as I can, I will only include series that I have fully caught up with if they are ongoing, have watched at least twice if they are completed, are not obscenely long, and are not single movies. Additionally, I will narrow down this particular top 10 to only scifi/fantasy. In no particular order: Cowboy Bebop Death Note Re;Zero Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Code Geass Legend of the Galactic Heroes Trigun Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood My Hero Acadamia Ghost in the Shell Honorable mentions to Steins;Gate, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Hunter x Hunter,, Spice and Wolf, and Elfen Lied. Additional honorable mentions in the "Animation but not anime" category for Avatar the Last Airbender and Arcane.

Chuummy

Gotta disagree with you on that one. There probably is an objective list of standards for what makes a great anime, but when it comes to actually implementing said standards, results can get pretty subjective. For example, I think MHA is a trash-tier show, but you have it in your top 10. I'd argue that the characters are one-dimensional and that the music is repetitive, but you might say that the characters are great and the music is awesome. Same standards, different opinions. At this point, I can't even really say whether AOT would make my top 10 since I've seen too many shows and loved too many shows. It's why I don't update my MAL anymore. Ratings eventually mean nothing. In the end, you either enjoyed something or you didn't. You can justify it all you like, but someone out there will disagree.

Jinrocker

@Chuummy First off, there are some things here that I agree with you about, however, there are quite a few things I disagree with. Yes, while you can describe characters as one-dimensional or dull, those positions are subjective. When evaluating characters, there are more objective measures to use; for example, the character's arc (if they are even given one), their consistency with the world, the consistency of their actions for how they have been characterized, and whether or not they fit tonally with the story being told. MHA's characters are mostly one-note, I agree; however, they also each have their own arc, changing over the course of the series, and their actions and motivations remain consistent with their characterization throughout. There are some characters that I enjoy and others I don't, but I can't deny that they are characterized and displayed well for their given purpose. The same can be done with music scoring. While music enjoyment is almost entirely a subjective experience, we shouldn't evaluate our preference for it when determining whether or not it is good. If a musical piece can enhance the mood of a scene or bring attention to a particular action taken or series of actions, that music has done its job and can be evaluated as good. Additionally, if a piece of music detracts from a scene or doesn't tonally fit with what is being shown visually, that music is bad, even if it is enjoyable. To reiterate from my previous comment, I thoroughly enjoy AOT, and I think it is a fantastic show. The characterization is top-tier, its plot is well thought out and surprisingly consistent with all of its twists (I'm looking at you, season 4), the animation is unique and visually stunning at some times, the scoring can get my heart pumping and the tears flowing, and there is no doubt it has had an extremely large cultural impact as well. However, there are blemishes as well. (No spoilers ahead, don't worry) It has pacing problems, particularly in seasons 1 and 3, its composition in many places is poor (G.O.T. has repeatedly expressed frustration at the shear number of cliffhangers and its constant backstory cutaways following said cliffhangers [as of 10/27, season 2, episode 7]), and its plot, while good, is not very original and follows in the footsteps of another anime that has a surprising amount of similarities (I don't want to give spoilers here so I will leave the particular anime I'm referencing out of this). The only reason I brought up a list-like format in the first place was in response to the assertion that AOT was "one of/the best anime of all time". The list I made only exists because I was asked to, not because I personally keep one. I, too, find the whole list thing largely unreasonable and unmanageable. However, even with all of the restrictions I put on the list I created, AOT didn't make the cut. While I think it's entirely possible and totally understandable why someone would say that they love AOT and it's the most fun they've had watching an anime and the most enjoyable they have ever seen, using a qualifier like 'best' is a step too far. While some probably find that pedantic, I don't think it is unreasonable to want good criticism to be a part of our media and our understanding of it, nor do I think it unreasonable to want to express that "Yes, this show is fantastic, but there are many better ones out there." For G.O.T., who is just starting to explore anime, I don't think we should send the message that this is the pinnacle of anime and it doesn't get better from here (which is what best means), not just because that would be bad for the future of anime on this channel, but also because it is not true.

Bruh Chan

I think what he means at the end when he said what do you think the enemy is that hes referring to whether it is the titan who is the real enemy or the people. Pretty significant line/question as you already saw by the time im writing this comment.

Natasha Sullivan

That is VERY subjective.. I'm sure there's a list of things that make a good Anime. Just like there are a list of qualities and botily proportions that make people objectively very attractive to the Human eye. But not everyone agrees on what that is. Everything is different to everyone. I'd easily list SNK in my top 5-10. I've re-watched seasons 1 and 2 3 or times.. Including now this reaction. Season 3 only... 1.5 times? and Haven't gotten to season 4 yet. Likes and dislikes are very subjective. Even throughout one's lifetime they change. someone's top 10 or top 50 can be very different from someone else's. Even if Objectiely SNK doesn't have "perfect proportions" It can still be on peoples top faves lists.

Flair

Your forgetting how accessable AoT is for non-anime fans. Alot of anime that people would list as the best, or top 10.. are fucking great but really not super accessable unless your REALLY into anime. JoJo would get thrown in, but JoJo is absolutely ridiculous. If you've never watched anime before, most people are gonna tune out because it ridiculous. I've watched it, thought it was good but its honestly not in my top anime list because for me, I didn't find it super enjoyable. . Re:Zero is fun and a pretty good subversion of Isekai, but full of tropes that alot of people find very off-putting. But I absolutely fucking love it. Ultimately, there is so much anime out there that really trying to list them by best is not possible. AoT has quality characters, a quality story, great animation and a great sound track. It's also very accessible for people that aren't super into anime as whilst it does contain some anime tropes, its at a much lower level then you typically get. Tastes are very different person to person and that means lists would be very different from person to person. AoT is absolutely right near, if not the top of list, when it comes to best anime for someone who is looking to get into anime to watch. It has everything people expect from a more typical, life action drama show, less of the things that for first time anime viewers can be very jarring silly scenes. It doesn't have a whole lot of stuff that is just odd to people not familiar with anime/japanese culture.

Xaniss

as a long time anime fan, having watched at least 250 of them, AOT is my fav, so... wrong lol

Jinrocker

The reading comprehension of some of you people is abysmal. I never said it couldn't be someone's favorite. I never said it was a bad show. I never said that it wasn't accessible. All I said was that calling it the best, a claim which requires investigating and rendering judgment on the quality of the show and its component parts, was incredibly dubious. There are a few glaring issues with the show that others thrown around in the 'best' category don't have and are just as good, if not better, in the categories AoT excels at. Best and favorite are two different words with two different meanings. Learn the difference and be precise in your language.

Love it that right here you already realized Levi and Mikasa were already very similar before finding out that theyre actually related and its an Ackerman trademark
