About SAO to watch, SAO season 2 Sword Art Online the Movie: Ordinal Scale (This movie is considered cannon, but it is considered 18+ for one particular scene.) Sword Art Online Alternative (This is not cannon for SAO. If you enjoy season 2 I would say that it's nice change to get away from Kiritos crew for a while, but it is completely skippable.) Sword Art Online: Alicization Sword Art Online: Alicization - War of Underworld Sword Art Online: Alicization - War of Underworld Part 2 Sword Art Online the Movie -Progressive- Aria of a Starless Night and Sword Art Online the Movie -Progressive- Scherzo of Deep Night movies (These are basically retelling of what happened in season 1 first half, from Asunas perspective. There are some alterations to story as we know from the anime, but are still mostly considered cannon. Personally don't feel need to watch them, but it is completely understandable if you would like to.)

Feel better Luke. I did watch the stream live, but needed to watch the last 20 minutes as I had to leave. It really was a great season and very self contained. Very interesting to see what you'll think of season 2.

2024-04-05 16:23:25 Hi Its time to talk about SAO history, especially of its hate and love now that you have finished the first season because nearly all commentary is really about this first season. The other seasons are basically irrelevant. If you hated it by this point you either didn’t watch the rest or you did and remained equally unimpressed. I don't care about changing opinions very much, but lots of people misunderstand why the commentary around SAO is the way it is, so if you want to really understand it then I have you covered below(with this way too long comment). I also I think the experience of watching it weekly is very different from binging it after release but since I’m starting from the beginning it comes from the perspective of a weekly watcher from 2012. The first thing to understand is SAO became massively popular as a weekly show on its release. You get shows like this every once in a while, Sailor Moon, DragonBall, Pokemon, Naruto, One Piece, Attack on Titan. These are shows that even if you are not an anime fan at all and live under a rock you’ve probably heard of and they become cultural touchstones. SAO for a brief time felt like it was headed to the same place. However, from episode 11 on for various reasons large portions of that weekly audience was turned off sometimes due to something specific, sometimes for reasons people maybe couldn’t quite articulate. Disappointment and lost potential are far more cutting than something you had no expectations for so arguments online proliferated and a market for Hate was established. On youtube within a few months Glass Reflection, Gigguk, and DoucheBagchoclat all released reviews of SAO that were “Tough but fair” acknowledging it was often enjoyable to watch while tearing into some of what they saw as its writing weaknesses. Then in 2014 Digibro (video now available at “ygg studio”) released an over 1 hour long teardown of SAO from start to finish, with multiple follow up videos, and a bunch of other SAO teardown videos followed with Mother’s Basement's being particularly notable. That online negativity eventually produced a lot of people who were default ultra-negative on the show beyond what it deserved often without ever having watched it, but simply by reputation. That is unfortunate, there are far worse anime, and in some respects (especially sexuality/ treatment of women) many modern anime are way worse than anything SAO does. It also probably improves its modern impression because if you go in expecting something between a flawed show and "the worst thing ever" you're more likely to be pleasantly surprised than disappointed. However, disappointment is far more cutting than something you had no expectations for in the first place and all the hate originates from the fact a large portion of the initial 2012 audience felt disappointed or even outright betrayed or disgusted by a show they had become invested in and wanted to enjoy. Of the reviews here are the ones I personally recommend as being fair to understand both sides of the SAO coin without being pointless ridiculously long tear downs or wowing praise. (wait to watch this till after first part of season 2/ GGO) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQVAidHnBo4 Reasons people dislike SAO are varied. I agree with many of the complaints, but often less intensely than others as I still like the show enough to watch the whole thing. I watched this coming out weekly in 2012 and this rewatch solidified that I personally very much like the first 10 episodes. When first watching I had minor problems with the sexualizing shots in episode 4 and 5, and a general sense of trepidation at the pacing because I felt it had skipped lots of things I very much would have liked to have seen, but the first is at the level of general “Japanese weirdness” I disapprove of but accept in many other anime, and the second is an indication I really was highly invested in the show and I could have loved it and been desperately seeking side content for the missed time if things were different, it’s emotional pull had me fully engaged and that understanding of emotional storybeats will continue to be a good point of the show long after I lose interest. So the reasons “people” and to some extent I dislike SAO are: 1. A small number of people claim that SAO was bad from the beginning(Digibro) but this has always been a minority view and not one I share. 2. Then Yui happened. The moment Yui dies and is “brought back” is the first moment my immersion was seriously broken. It’s a narrative asspull without any reasonable justification and I could no longer think of SAO world as a “real” place. But my immersion was recovered for a bit. 3. then episode 14 happened and the same immersion break occurred again but worse and this time there was no recovering. In a world where the willpower of jesus kirito overcomes code and technology without justification I simply no longer cared about the unrealistic sci-fi world, its rules, or its stakes. The main villains reasoning being nonexistent is equally disappointing. However, I was still invested in Kirito and Asuna and wanted to see what happened when they escaped the virtual world to reality so I kept watching and in the following episodes I did still find parts of the story interesting and engaging especially the technology and real world parts but the negative feelings just accumulate over the episodes. 4. The fairy game scenes are now kinda boring, 5. Asuna is now a literal damsel in distress, I personally actually don’t have that huge a problem with this, but for many having a rare example of a powerful woman nearly co-equal to the main character reduced to this is a deeply disappointing narrative turn 6. the scientists as virtual slugs is way too bizarre and out of nowhere for me to right off as “Japan”, and the slime assaulting Asuna turns me off. 7. The “Deus ex Machina” divine intervention without narrative reason that started in episode 11, become way more common, from the way the admin keycard that Asuna drops from the sky is used to the second appearance of Kayaba 8. I absolutely frieking HATE everything about Suguha’s “in love with brother” plotline. Every second that plot is on screen is one I wish the show was doing *anything* else. I can’t appreciate anything about those scenes, and the worst part is the novels at least understand that it is disgusting, but the show with its camera angles sexualizes her while this plot is happening and that makes it feel even more disgusting. 9. The Asuna being sexually assaulted scene is really bad. For some people it being included at all is enough to turn them completely off the show. For me though the problem is the way the scene is used narratively. It is used primarily to motivate Kirito and make us hate the villain. This is common in Japanese storytelling, but its often cheap and offputting. One big reason is that the scene is used to motivate the “good men”, but never deeply considers the women who are being assaulted. In this case Asuna’s experience, thoughts, actions she might pursue afterward or trauma are never considered at all. Its just “kirito won after a motivation boost so we move on” 10. Without emotional investment the next arcs are boring. If you made it this far and are still invested in the characters and the world you might really like GGO or the next arcs, but personally I just didn’t care about them anymore. I still watched the rest, and I watch other stuff I consider to be much worse, but I don’t have any desire to rewatch it.

9. To my knowledge there is nothing confirming new season. There is also Reddit threads that note the problem with the amount of story that has been written so far and how much later the anime series is usually that we could count our selves lucky if we get one in this ongoing decade.

FullHeart

jesus christ dude. At least format this in a way that's readable. Holy wall of text.

"Sword Art Online Alternative (This is not cannon for SAO. ... but it is completely skippable.)" - I understand you saying that from a story point of view but at least in my opinion that one is more fun and enjoyable than most of the regular seasons.

Devilish132 .

And on top of that it is a cannon for SAO. It's based of same author Novels. At some point He decided to go back to actual SAO and write a novel floor after floor. Its shame they decided to do them as movies instead of full tv show, since They skip a lot 'couse of movie lenght...

Koga Wolfe

I really don't understand all the negatives people say about the show. To me every single thing was great, there is absolutely no negatives in the show whatsoever. It's a masterpiece all the way through. There is rarely a show I don't like. I watch shows for what they are and not what others want them to be.

Juho Kaartoaho

I do agree with you that they are fun to watch and that I personally liked it also. I merely stated that it's not cannon because Luke has said that he will watch everything that is cannon. I will leave it for him to decide if he want's to include it automatically or if it requires another vote.

Juho Kaartoaho

It's true that those movies are cannon, but it is also true that they changed things from the show as it is. There is a chance that those could confuse him on what happened assuming he remembers it well enough. Also I would have preferred them to be regular episode length, since I find it way more challenging to find time to enjoy movie length shows in one sitting, rather than binge 2-3 episodes at a time.

24:20 wait wait I wouldnt be surprised if there wasnt a SINGLE HUMAN WOMAN in salamanders lmao. BRO SQUAD hahahahah. all about power and fighting lol ( I dont remember )

Iron_claw

There are shows that I really like that For some reason they get a lot of hate. I really like black clover. I like Fairy tail. I like sword art online and I like domestic girlfriend. In fact? I heard that domestic girlfriend was a awful anime. It was really bad it sucked. You shouldn't watch it so I was like. You know what? I'm gonna watch it to see how bad it really is. Because it's probably really bad. But whatever I like to watch anime. And? I ended up thinking well. This is really, really good. This is actually a really good story. It had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. But I think the reason it gets so much hate is because what the anime does and it's story. It's kind of like a taboo thing over here in the West, but over in Japan it's not really a huge taboo over there and it's more of a culture different.

MonographicSingleheaded

28:20 I mean, the guy is a saint atp cuz Asuna is maybe the sexiest woman mc in the entire isekai shelf.

2024-04-05 16:23:25 tl:dr almost all SAO hate originates from the portion of original 2012 weekly SAO watchers who had extremely negative feelings when a show they were invested in let them down. Its worse to be disappointed than to have no expectations in the first place. Youtubers then capitalized on this market and it became "overhated"

The more i rewatch season 1 the more i actually like the ALO arc more than the SAO aincrad arc honestly. My only complaints with season 1 are the middle section of aincrad are kinda boring and the stories dont really relate to the main story progression until asuna comes back. i didnt like that whole murder mystery thing, and Lizbeths episode is kinda meh, but the rest is good i just like the consistency of ALO, its not self contained stories per episode and theres actual progression each episode and i love leafa. And the payoff at the end, and the irl scenes too just make it so good. Only complaint about ALO is leafas freind is annoying as hell aside from him at the end, but thats whatever But yeah people hating on SAO have never made sesne, its literally 90% all bandwagon blind hate for no reason other than the fact SAO is popular, its extremely cringe why would i hate a series cause of a horny tentacle scene Lmao?? (its hot and lead to more cultured art being made lmao) and even if you hate those scenes, how on earth could that make you hate the whole series, makes no sense. The one with the main villain at the end just makes you despise him, which is the literal point, and makes the payoff of making him suffer so much more satisfying

shibanu_IM

you gonna watch ss2 right? i watched ss1-2 and 1 the movie(about singer one) then stop with my heart full of joy.

Sai

19:00 LUKE, SAO isn't an Isekai! It's a Full Dive VR MMORPG game anime.

Саша Милошевић

u really need to turn off those sounds, i cant even count how many times someone ruined not just your immersion in the moment but everyone who watches with you, its funny sometimes but 90 percent of times its timed really badly and ruins the immersion

Pete Bickmore

So looking back at season 1, it’s interesting. The ALO arc isn’t as bad as I remember but it still has it’s problems. But I think it gets it’s hate because of the way the Aincrad arc ended. The first 8 episodes of were just exciting. They’re done at 1000mph but they’re extremely fun and exciting to watch. Then they go off to the cabin for a couple episodes to slow things down a bit which isn’t a bad thing but the plot is just a bit odd. Plus Kirito and Asuna’s relationship goes from flirting to parenthood in what feels like 30 minutes worth episodes. It’s a bit jarring. Then they go back to carry on going through the bosses, and then we’re fighting the final boss and the aincrad arc is over. It really annoyed people because it does feel like we’ve missed out on so much. the aincrad arc should have been 24 episodes of story. This isn’t the anime’s fault but there’s not enough focus on the bosses. So many potential stories that could have been told + they could have slowed down the first part a bit. The main goal of ALO is great though. Kirito goes in to a new game to save Asuna. Has to learn a new game with new mechanics as quick as possible to save her. It really does start off strong too but it does get bogged down as I find the whole slyph/salamander political stuff not very interesting. Could have been done way better. And the idea behind the Sugu storyline is great. But make it familial thing rather a romance thing and it would have stuck the landing. Just ends up being a bit weird. But it has a really great, hype ending and it does wrap everything up nicely. Good amount of episodes for the arc too. Looking forward to watching the next arc because it’s been years since I’ve seen it .

FraaD

Yeah im agree ,its funny for 1st time but annoying if that appears again but yeah that just st*pid people who want to be noticed by Luke and other and thinks thats cool

Renaud Nadeau

People will always find something to complain about. Some people hate the villain's, some people hate the fact that rape is used often as a motivation of the bad guys. People hate that the show moved on from the "death game" way too fast, without realizing that it was written that way by the author. Sure things were still skipped but it was a bunch of short stories of their lives trapped in that world. So yeah Aincrad moved on quickly. I get that people find things they don't like. But yeah the hate is very much over the top when it's a good story and well animated. It just doesn't appeal to everyone.

Renaud Nadeau

Haha let the man finish all of the canon story first. Then we can get him laughing at abridged.

Robert Becker

The only thing that isn't Canon is the Progressive movies, They are part of a separate canon light novel/Manga series Called SAO Progressive.

nioyume

Won’t be for several years. Depending on what they do with the moon cradle novels since they’re just two and could be a short season or movie. Though the final arc Unital Ring is still ongoing and still incomplete, so until it ends there won’t be much of another season.

Stukedood

i've never understood the hate for the fairy dance arc (one we just watched) that where most people dropped off, but personally SAO is literally my number 2 anime.

Mike Baker

“Tell Kirito, it’s not like he knows [your brother]”. Well, you’re not wrong, he’s never even met him once!

Suichoku

Well written, you really did put into words some of the problems I have with the show. SAO is one of those stories that gets worse the more you analyze it. I never watched further than this, but I'm giving it a chance since people do say later arcs are great. SAO used to be really cool and new for young me. I feel like it was best just watched as is, so it really is a Luke type anime (just lots of action and epic moments). For example I did like Eminence more since I knew it was a parody and just watched the action and bs, and enjoyed it for it.

Abe J

I don't know if the mic was just low, but 10 min in and you sound like an old person mumbling to themselves. Add in the snuggy for the ultimate cosplay

Mushoku Tensei - April 7, 2024

Dj

Yui is like a computer virus in this game LOL can't wait for you to watch the next season. there's also a new SAO based on Asuna's POV, but not sure if the anime has been completed

Mericat

The ALO and GGO arcs are definitely weaker than the og, but they’re by no means *bad* storylines—and I think a lot of people dislike Asuna’s part in ALO so much that it kind of overshadows whatever else might have been good about the arc. Def not my favorite either, but I love the fairy world and I love how they expanded the potential of the universe with the World Seed. Glad you love it so far!! SAO is truly a classic. I especially can’t wait until you get to Alicization—honestly, it nearly rivals the original arc imo. BUT before that you should know that there are two movies—Progressive is somewhat of a retelling of the first season from Asuna’s pov, so it would technically be next chronologically but not a super important watch; the other is Ordinal Scale, which is GREAT and takes place after the end of season 2, before Alicization. To my knowledge its events are never referenced in Alicization so again, not super important to watch, but again, now you have the info should you want to do everything in chronological order instead of saving the movies for last.

MerabuHalcyon

Isn't there an OVA that he needs to watch that leads into season 2 proper?

Lulu WT

Love this! Can't wait for you to start reacting to the second season.

Sigfried

luck is totally going to cry in the last ark of season 2

Calixen

Been waiting to watch this all day since I'm working during your streams >.< I'm glad you're enjoying the SAO so far, people complain too much, it's not as bad as people put it out to be! The only movie that's cannon between the seasons 2 and 3 (alicization), is Ordinal Scale. There's two other movies that are pretty good, more of a prequal from other prespectives? LUKE IF YOU SEE THIS, Ordinal Scale has a revealing cheeky scene, but I guess it depends on the version? As much as it pains me, may want to look for a censored version of the movie for twitch/youtube

Hououin Kyouma

You need to watch the Sword Art Online: Extra Edition movie which is kind of a bridge between seasons 1 and 2. Most of it is a recap but they show new things as well. It's both an epilogue of season 1 and sort of a prologue of season 2 since it will introduce a character who plays an important role in season 2. So, definitely watch it before starting season 2.

Herrscher Of Cope

I do find it interesting that Luke enjoys the pacing of SAO when that is one of its biggest criticisms (and one I can actually kind of agree with). Still, Glad that he hasn’t let the “hate train” drag this show down for him. Despite its flaws, it’s still one of my top 10

Ian Campbell

How dare your chat say bourbon is better than scotch. You got good tastes Luke.

Dannie

Seriously. I find his chat the most annoying part of these reactions.

Kosumi

The callback to the Avatar ride at Disneyland gave me a good chuckle

dragean greyfield

You have to remember that alfhiem online is a front for illegal human experimentation. They don’t need the game to last just long enough to get results.

Magic-Cat-39

Luke is becoming a degenerate 😐😂

slipstride

Imo this season of Sao is the weakest by far not to say its bad just everyone thing that comes after is better I think can't wait for next season of harem builder the anime we get best girl

Lexi

I don't like what this arc did with Asuna. I don't like that she was reduced to a sexualized damsel in distress. I don't like that she gets sexual assaulted multiple times. I'm of the belief that authors shouldn't use sexual assault in their story unless they're going to treat the topic with the care and weight it deserves. An anime like Kageki Shoujo manages to do that; Sword Art Online does not. In Sword Art Online it's used as an exploitative writing trick at best, and fanservice for a certain demographic at worse. Did you know you can buy a figure of Asuna depicting her as King Oberon's captive? According to the manufacturer's website it even comes with metal chains, "allowing you to complete her captured appearance in its entirety." But I'm sure people only buy it to remind them of how awful her sexual assault was, right? Right...? It really taints an otherwise good arc for me. Nice ending, though.

Zachary Kruger

1:42:03 - 1:42:13 Luke saying that Suguha and Kazuto should just have some "in-game fun" and that "it's just a game" and "it doesn't mean anything" clearly he hasn't seen or doesn't remember a certain Black Mirror episode...

Matthew

I'm so glad you liked it cuz this is the part that loses most people. Can't wait for you to see what's in store for Season 2!!!

James Collins

Finally a reactor of all people feels the same way I did when I fist watched sao 😌😌😌

Sean Mcguinness

God I want him to watch the SAO Abridged series SO bad!

Rugo

berserk spoilers if luke sees this: I think suguo is terrible, a very very high up villain in how terrible he is, but the wildest thing I saw in chat was someone saying hes ""worse than griffith by a long shot" haha

ClerZz IMO

Season 1 done, nice!

Daniel Turchan

So, SAO was one of the first Anime I showed my sister after I got her into One Piece and she said she wanted to watch more anime… the show is good and we’re just chilling watching… but u know the meme about “anime when ur parents walk in” literally the only parts they saw were the tentacle part and the Sugo r@pe scene, why do parents always walk in at the worst times

Adam Saunders

Every time i rewatch season 1 im such a mess. This show was my 2nd anime and the first I ever finished and god what a fantastic one it is, flaws and all.

Cédric Michaud

An Isekai means that a character starts in a world and goes to a different world. If you consider that a virtual reality game is another world, you can definetely consider it an Isekai.

Cédric Michaud

And it's not like the MC is related to the two girls anyway so I don't understand the whole thing about saying there is incest. I liked Domestic Girlfriend too, it was a good drama/romance.

rostikowb

My least favorite part of the SAO, it's good that we got through it, the next arches will only get better P.S I don't like this arc, not because of the questionable love between the sister and the brother, and not because of the disgusting villain. I don't even care how controversial a show can be if it's well done. I have a problem with: - too much fan service - it's too edgy - the main villain is too cartoonish - the plot is too weak

Docnox

please tell me he check Gun Gale, personally my fav arc

Sai

You're grasping at straws. It's a VR world. Data on a server. It's not an isekai.

rostikowb

I don't agree with a lot of things, but basically you're right, because of such weak initial arches, people couldn't get to Alicization

rostikowb

I like how nowadays murder and genocide have become something normal and can be used even in children's cartoons, but when a villain touches the heroine's breasts to show how bad he is, it's too much 😂

ilyas mateus

Thanks for react. I really enjoy SAO

Mr. Dog

I do think part 2 had a crappy story, but I did really like the tentacle scene quite a bit.

Daddelzeit

I won't say the Slug-Scene is my favourite, but I don't find it that bad. It shows what kind of people work for Sugou it also shows what Sugou thinks about them - they're literally Slugs for him. But the author has his creepy moments when it comes to female characters.

Sir Elderock Komdragon

In the books he throws the knife on to a the roof of a van

Kyle Garrett

Setting the game pain absorber to 0 is kind of fucked up, considering there's hundreds of thousands or millions of people in game, and now all of a sudden they're all feeling real world levels of pain from every injury they experience, and as the scumbag said, below 3 your body experience real pain and injury from that low of a setting, so Kirito did it for a cool moment, but in the process probably traumatized and severely injured tens of thousands of people at the very least.

PriestOfThighs

Ive fully seen people stop watching shows because of even a little bit of it, when they would be happy to watch people just get absolutely slaughtered and not care all that much

PriestOfThighs

biggest problem with AC is that the old combat system started to get really boring and too easy, so I get why they wanted to change it up but they didnt take it into the best direction, I want my stealth back, the fact there are things in Valhalla that force you to go loud is dumb

Niho Kein

Chat really needs to shut up. Just let him enjoy the damn anime. If you dont like sao just dont watch it. Why do ruin it for other people. Yeah the tentacle scene was bad but it just shows how bad the people doing experiment are. Honestly if you think about it, this arc is not that bad. It's just people badmouthing it

Barack O. Llama

hey, if you enjoy tentacle r*pe thats a you thing. i wouldn't admit it though if i were you.

Barack O. Llama

wtf is wrong with you? why would you admit to enjoying r*pe on the internet lmao. someone lock this man up lol

Niho Kein

Just WTF??? Did you properly read what i said? Who said i enjoy that disgusting scene. I just said that scene just shows how scumbag villains in this arc are. Just because villains in a story are bad people it doesnt mean story is bad. Or what? Did you expect all stories are about flower and friendship?

AnsonEnderBorn

3:05:26 that one commenter that said "20TB update" got me cracked up LMFAO.

Sumic

how many other good animes rely on rape for like half of the bad guys? you can do a good anime without making the villain a rapist, or you can even do a good rapist bad guy if you have intent beyond "make hentai". It's also not even the worst part of this show, ppl thinking that the sexual stuff is why people hate it is just wrong. There's ALOOOT to hate if you dig at it

Markus Wallin

Islay Scotch all the way!
