In Japan, manufacturers are concentrated in three main areas.

To the east is Tokyo, the capital of Japan with a large population and a thriving IT industry.

To the west is Osaka, Japan's second largest city, where the consumer electronics and semiconductor industries are thriving.

In the center is Hamamatsu, which does not have a large population but is home to musical instrument manufacturers such as Yamaha, Roland, and Kawai musical instruments.

Compared to Europe and the United States, Japan has fewer modular synthesizer manufacturers. One reason for this is the lack of a thriving garage culture (individuals producing small batches of products) in Japan.

Another reason is that grooveboxes are more popular than modular synths, as Japan is home to groovebox makers such as Korg and AKAI.
