🎵 Hello, daddy, hello, mom
🎵 I'm your ch-ch-ch-cherry NATIVE WEST COAST WILDFLOWER SEED MIX bomb
🎵 Hello world I'm your wild girl
🎵 I'm your ch-ch-ch-cherry NATIVE WEST COAST WILDFLOWER SEED MIX bomb

Yup, you guessed it: I took a class on making Native West Coast Wildflower Seed Mix bombs!

This class by SymbiOp is for everyone whose ever walked by a vacant lot and thought "this could be full of native flowers and pollinators." Over an hour on a weekend we were given a crash course on guerrilla habitat restoration and how to make these sturdy little clay-dirt-seed marbles that one can, allegedly, chuck over a chain link fence onto under-utilized land.

Our instructor included the word "allegedly" a lot when talking about the (alleged) ways in which a seed bomb could be deployed and where, and also warned us that various government law enforcement agencies were known to keep tabs on gatherings in Portland that have the word "bomb" in them ever since the riots that started in 2020. Planting native wildflowers: Serious Business!

Native West Coast Wildflower Seed Mix: Baby Blue Eyes, Black-Eyed Susan, Blanketflower - Indian Perennial, Camas - Common, Coreopsis - Plains Tall, Gilia - Globe, Heal-All, Phlox - Large Flowered Lupine - Small Flowered Bi-Color, Lupine -  Riverbank, Lupine - Large Leaf, Rose Checker Mallow, Sea Blush, Buttercup - Straitbeak, Hollyhock - Tall Wild, Tidy Tips, Buttercup - Western, Yarrow - Western, Godetia - Farewell to Spring, Poppy - California Perennial, Clarkia - Diamond, Clarkia - Pink Fairies, Clarkia - Winecup, Oregon Sunshine, Vetch - Big Deer, Primrose - Dense Spike, Clover - Spanish Phacelia - Lacy.

Though I've kept a little jar of seed bombs in both my regular bag and my biking fanny pack (British patrons: kindly bite your tongue 😤) so I'll be ready to chuck a seed bomb at the first sign of vacant lot, the embarrassing reality is that I have not done this even once yet. I dunno, man, I just completely forget to look, I guess, because I depart from my starting point and arrive at my ending point without having noticed any suitable spaces in between. Honestly, it's an uncomfortable admission on how oblivious I am to my surroundings and maybe I should try paying a bit more attention when I'm out.

Yes, yes, of course I looked up seed bomb instructions for you and also SymbiOp offers pre-made ones specific to PNW ecology, too.

Bombs away!

Now all I can picture is Joan Jett running around Portland late at night, guitar in one hand and lobbing seed bombs with the other.

I've yet to have luck seeding my own backyard with California poppy (stupid grass) but this gives me more ideas of seeds to try.

I missed it too! I appreciate that there are specific PNW instructions (ever since I learned that milkweed varieties, for example, are super specific to the butterflies indigenous to an area, for example, I’m pedantic about this detail) and now I’m going to look for California Coast ones. ❤️
