These are the sashes that came with the curtains that came with the house we bought nine years ago.

They’ve been disintegrating for years and for years I keep telling myself I will (hand) sew replacements and for years I have not done it.

This is the sewing machine that an incredibly generous reader bought for me with her extra Amazon points much earlier this year. Or was it even late last year? A while ago, for sure.

I took it out of its box and that was as far as I got because I just had no idea how to even approach this magnificent beast. Are you supposed to bow first, so it won’t see you as a threat? Do they… do they smell fear? Because if they do, I’m fucked.

These are the first stitches Karine Charlebois taught me how to sew on my machine once she had set it all up for me when she visited last week. It has an attachment for sewing buttonholes! You stick the button in one section of this mechanical arm and it automatically calibrates how big the hole will need to be and then it just… SEWS it! On its own! You don’t even move the fabric yourself!!! It also sews strings of flowers???

And other designs too.

After the threads were threaded and the tension on the loops adjusted and I’d filled up my scrap T-shirt fabric with jumbles of stitches, Karine asked if I had anything I needed to make and I started to think for half a second until I remembered YES. YES, I DO.

These are the curtain sashes that Karine taught me to sew on my sewing machine.

They are a marked improvement, even though I made them too short (the originals were too long! I overcompensated, even though Karine was like "Are you sure you want them so short?" and I was like I KNOW WHAT I'M DOING).

Who lives in this house? Certainly not ratty trash goblins U_U No siree, not here.

Today I christened her. She doesn’t have a name yet, but she does have my blessing.

(Sticker by Marigold Mural Studios.)

So many ideas. So many projects. I’m going—

OMG.

I literally just now thought of a name for her.

Captain Picard.

Because she makes it............................... sew.

You n' me, Captain Picard! Let's MAKE IT SEW!
