Another accidental selfie as I fumbled with my phone to take a picture of my plants.
Have you ever seen lettuce seeds in the wild*?
*(The “wild” of my backyard garden in a suburb of a manmade city)
These are the seeds produced by the seeds I harvested from last year’s lettuce start that I allowed to bolt. Translation: I, PERSONALLY, CREATED THESE SEEDS WITH MY OWN HANDS AND NOTHING ELSE BUT MY DESIRE TO WILL THEM INTO EXISTENCE.
This is bolted lettuce! That means upon reaching reproductive maturity, it shot up one tall stalk (much like a bolt of lightening) to produce the flowers that would produce seeds that would ensure its continued existence. Those white puffy tops are designed to catch the wind and sale away with its single seed cargo and deposit it some distance away to start the process of growth all over again.
Look how fuckin tall lettuce can bolt! Gotta get up high so those seed-parachutes catch a good strong breeze.
Similar story with these spinaches 🌱🌱🌱
I planted this fresh batch from the seeds I collected by hand from the previous round of store bought starts.
This cauliflower, however, planted itself. The previous cauliflower (which I did grow from store bought seed) stealthily spilled its own seed upon the ground before I harvested them all and a handful of second generation broccolis have sprung up in the area around their predecessor.
Of course, I couldn’t have known that when I planted my (store bought) bell pepper starts, so now I’ve got these broccoli youths growing way too close to them- but honestly, I like it.
I like my cultivation mixed with a little chaos. It keeps me surprised and it keeps me humble.
I have my plans and nature has hers and together we’re making something that delights me (and maybe you too).
