There's so much talk and laughter about channelling our inner child, about letting go and just having fun like we used to when we were kids.

Although I agree with this, I don't believe there is enough talk about CONNECTING with our inner child. Listening and learning about parts of our current self that you have been holding onto since we were young. The bullshit narratives you were told that went on to become the words that you live by. Because our childhood shapes the way we think, feel and act. Almost every part of our being has come from what we experienced when we were young.

If it feels a little strange or awkward to imagine opening up to your child self, trying thinking of inner child work as a process of self-discovery.

Feelings of unexplainable shame, guilt, anger or sadness will most likely trace back to your childhood. So how do you explore this? By connecting with your inner child and listening to what they have to say.

If you've read this far you may be asking, 'well how the fuck do I do that?!'

Welcome to the journey of healing, my friend.

My first piece of advice would be to seek help from a professional. If you break your arm, you wouldn't try to fix it yourself right? Because you don't know how. So why would you try to heal years of suppressed emotion on your own?

But if seeking a professional is out of reach for you right now, just start small. Journaling, meditating or simply reflecting.

Just remember, Rome wasn't built in day.
