Hearing QT say that this movie invented the Manic Pixie Dreamgirl makes my back hurt. My opinion is that Summer knew what the guy wanted and shouldn't have let it go on, but the guy also knew what he wanted and knew that summer didnt want the same things. You can't control who you love though so I wouldn't say anyone's in the wrong, it's just life :)

It is a sad movie but good movie as it cause reflexion and this inside feeling I think. Not sure if I can say Summer was wrong or not, just know that people are complex and sometimes they do and act just based on what makes them feel well, it is selfish but it's easy and most common way that these kind of situations happen, each of them wanted to enjoy the moment just had different idea of what was that and the consequences of it.

Actually so interesting hearing Maya and QT say "no guy is like this." At risk of sounding like a Not Like Other Boys, my friends and I watched this in our early 20s and were all like "finally a movie that captures the guy's experience in romance." The awkward obsessing over a girl you have feelings for even though you just met. Getting "I'm not interested" followed by romance anyway. The stage where every little thing about them beautiful and perfect (the most unrealistic part is that he actually admits this to his guy friends). The part where she just disengages instead of having difficult conversations. The part after break-up, where you just have to swallow the fact that you didn't make her happy and someone else does. The post-everything reflection where you question how much of it happened the way you think it did. Not that EVERY relationship was like this, but every man I knew watched this movie and went "yeah" and had a story about a past relationship, or someone they knew. It makes me a little sad that one of the few romance movies where the man isn't a caricature of masculinity to appeal to female audiences gets met with "this isn't real."

her writing takes a weird dip near the end, I feel like making her suddenly someone's fiancée was really random and made her look awful, cause up until that point you could see why they are both in the wrong/both have a different understanding of a relationship or what they want from each other.

Thanks for putting this on the tier 1, if it was a mistake then oops but thanks anyways. Watching this again I still like it but def see that both of them were at fault but yea summer def micro cheats and leads him on. He should’ve known his boundaries and moved on after a few months and she should’ve let him know it wasn’t going anywhere, she may have said it but I think her actions said otherwise. That train and wedding part though is bananas and the hand holding at the end too. Relationships are hard and we don’t always do the right thing just what keeps us happy or comfortable in that moment

i think they both had their flaws, but i tend to lean more towards summer’s side. i think it’s because i’ve very much been a tom in my life, and that mentality and immaturity really held me back in life. tom definitely isn’t wrong for being confused with what summer actually felt, but you also have to consider that the signals tomorrow was getting probably didn’t mean much to summer at all. that’s especially true when you take into account that tom’s an unreliable narrator. for example, that moment where she’s laughing in bed is so significant to him that it becomes a symbol of his feelings towards her, but for her it was probably just hanging out with a friend. idk i think it’s a sad situation where they’re both at fault but also not at fault. it just is. they both expected something from each other that the other couldn’t give.

I think both are wrong. Calling Summer an emotional terrorist is easy because we are seeing things from Tom's side. I don't think walking away would've been easy for her, the same way it wouldn't have been easy for him. We just put the blame on her more because we see more of Tom's pain since he's the main character. She also was depressed and not happy.

You know, not a movie I ever would have watched on my own. But damn do Maya and QT make it better! Their running commentary was delightfully interspersed and really gave additional fun context to what would have otherwise been a bit of a drag of a movie for me. Gotta agree with the ladies here, that Summer really screwed over our boy Tom in the end. But I guess it’s a happy ending for them both, so good for them. Looking forward to next week’s Trash TV!

so, before I transitioned (MtF) I’m ngl I thought just like Tom in this movie. And, granted, that’s influenced by pop culture and I was also >17. BUT, a lot of the things in here where QT is like “no one thinks like that” or “no one actually says that”, I can confidently say I did used to think like that, about women or about different relationships and situations. The scene where he’s pep talking himself in the mirror, or the scene where he has a moment of discovery after she says, “I’ve never told anyone that before”. That is exactly how my brain functioned. And I’m not commenting this to flex or to oppose anyone, but just to inform that those types of people actually exist lol and I was one of them
