YIPEEEE BOOKCLUB

Seth Christensen

Nick is so real for that. I read 65% then deleted it off my phone. Unreadable. Keep doing book club, this is super fun content! ♥️

Derrick Vivarais

I'll be real I'm with Nick on this one, i tried to finish the book i just couldn't... I made it about 1/3 of the way through but just had to stop for my own well being 🥲

Evan Riley

This book may have been one of the worst things I've read this decade.

Nick should wear a dunce cap all video and write 10x "I will never skip book club again." On a whiteboard if he doesn't have a chalkboard. Or balance 3 books on his head all video or the past few books book club read so he can feel the weight of book club's punishment. Or asian style punishment, hold the books with his arms out the entire video.

I haven’t gotten a chance to read the first two books (the eps have been great regardless) but I’m so down to read a biography on the behind the scenes of Playboy!! I’ll for sure read the next one!

linda

i'm with ludwig, i liked the book lol

linda

yiso cosplay for nick's punishment would've been niche but very funny

Morgan T

I love book club! I’m not a sci fi person and didn’t really like the book but was excited to see the ep to see you guys hate it too lol

Jennica

I love sci-fi and hated this book, love to hear the reflections though

Olivier Barbeau

I love sci-fi/fantasy and thought the book was almost unreadable. I absolutely would not have finished it if not for bookclub. I also want to point out, the Hugos have lost a LOT of respect in the last few years. SDG winning is honestly not that surprising, and I don't think the book garners anywhere near as much respect as some of the older winners.

Moose

A Cormac McCarthy novel would be interesting to hear them discuss (All the Pretty Horses is my top pick).

Pnwoah

I would've ditched the book but I have a long commute so it was better than not doing anything lol

Mikey

Two of my favorite books I think would be good for book club are The Time Traveler’s Wife and A Beautiful Mind. I think at least one of them has read one or both though.

Aleshia

Sorry yall didn't seem to enjoy it, speculative fiction isn't for everyone! I had a great time with it but I've also read Emily Tesch's other works, so I'm clearly bias :)

Just going to jot down some of my thoughts as I go through this: It’s funny that QT thought there wasn’t much drama in this book, I agree with her in that I was expecting a little more romantic development but I had to take breaks sometimes because I felt like the tension was often so thick I felt exhausted reading through. Especially like with the lingering tensions with Cleo and Avi where they ended up having very Love-Hate relationships with Kyr by the end and I was never sure if Avi was going to blow up again. And all of Kyr’s nestmates Hated her (except Lisbel) until the very very end and I felt like that was well portrayed because readers could see it, understand the horror that girls were going through when they were assigned to Nursery, but Kyr was so deep in the sauce that it never crossed her mind. I never thought I would end up agreeing with Ludwig so much but I also felt like the tension with Mags was always present throughout the first timeline. I also agreed with Ludwig in that I was a certified Yiso hater by the end and I did not like the romantic subplot with them. On whether the book was well written or not, I agree with Slime, sometimes it was way too “spoon-feed-y” like especially the part where Cleo outright complains about how everyone’s names are very fascist leaning and it’s like “maybe we could just let that be subtext” and I think the end went on too long, I was def ready for it to be over by the time everyone was gathering in Nursery. I’d also say that there’s a kind of online sentiment in a lot of circles, especially queer ones, where they Love a story that goes “just this once, everyone makes it out” and against all odds they don’t have to sacrifice people to achieve a good ending, so it’s likely this plot was kind of a response to that popular idea. I agree a few characters shouldn’t have made it out, like Lynn, and it was kind of dumb for the entirety of the ship to get to leave. My favorite scene was either when Avi and Kyr were talking in the third timeline and kind of trying to figure out if they hate each other or not or when Cleo and Kyr were talking in the second timeline and kind of trying to figure out if they hate each other or not. I guess I’m a simple girl, I liked the complexity to their relationships.

It’s funny that this book was so polarizing, it’s not my favorite book I’ve ever read but I won’t lie, I liked it a lot and around the time Slime did, I was hooked on it too. The Hank Green twist is so funny I had been wondering so hard what drew Ludwig to this book lol. I’m looking forward to QT’s book because I read 3 of the playboy autobiographies partly because of her and I’ve been looking for my next fix

ConEG

i enjoyed it but agree with slime that the prose was pretty weak. i noticed pretty quick that the author would only have conversations described as "he said/she said" and it drove me insane. but yeah it scratched an itch for sci-fi i haven't had since i read some of the ender's game books (especially since i stopped because that author's a bit shit). the agoge in particular reminded me of the simulators ender trained on, and i liked the twist for them being human's attempt at the intergalactic reality bending super computer that doomed earth. there's some neat stuff in here but i go back to the prose and also how small these galaxies and realities end up feeling that hurt it.

Faye852

wahoo!

Booba Jumpscare

Michael Hendrickx

those ogres in the white castle were actually orcs in Minas Tirith, the author confirmed it at the end of the book. i caught it quickly i was like this bitch the throne of gondor i swear

Daimondz

Slime I think you would really like Project Hail Mary if you haven’t read it yet. Don’t know if you fw the martian, but it’s like that but with less nerd shit in it. It’s word for word what you asked for when you said you like the idea of someone alone in a space station in space

carpetburns

I love how maya is aware of packing peanuts because of the environment and Ludwig knows because he eats them

Darren Hertenstein

Did not enjoy this book. I, like Nick, did not finish it.

Cameron

Usually not a fan of sci-fi, but I liked the way Kyr’s de-radicalization was written. Also I reallly loved Yiso. Excited for the next book!

Bri

i'm right between lud and maya on this one, it brought me back to my percy jackson-enjoying days but found myself trudging through the book most of the time. interesting commentary from the author fs!

Daniel Garcia

It would be funny if maya qnd qt played it takes two

Bridie

we got porn on Wine About It before GTA6

Bridie

I really struggled to read this book, it felt like I got 300 pages in before I got to a point where I felt like "I want to finish this" instead of "I have to finish this". Damn you, Hank Green...

Carmen Ramirez

i didn’t read but this was really fun to listen to
