AFPiece Investigator

QT wants one thing and its fucking disgusting (bringing people together to spread joy)

Lizzy

I’ll be honest I did not read the book, but I’m here for the dram

Jaylane Nunez

This book had a several months waitlist on libby 😭

Darkrow

I got the book borrowed through my local library 2 blocks away from my house and finished it pretty soon. :)

Virilikus

Nick wears glasses and he still couldn't figure out discord? tf?

Virilikus

Maya reading the book while listening to the audio book yammer at 2x speed is actual insanity

Briana

So excited for bookclub! I own a little free library and conveniently there was a copy of this book in there, so I got extremely lucky lol

Jacob Ickes

I read this book a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it. Never talked about it with anyone so it’s nice to hear how others interpreted it!

Haiku

I really liked the book club. It made me rethink a lot of feelings I had about the book. I thought the Marx death was really corny but the more I thought about it the execution was bad but the thematic element was actually pretty good. I think that the author was trying make a point of the fact that Sam putting himself at the center of projects and using them as a way to escape was negative impacting Sadie. Nick's perspective of Sam not being able to be happy if he's not getting what he wanted opened that up to me. Marx represented the moving on from the game life to Sadie and the move towards a life that is outside of the domain of some other person. Also I thought the book was pretty good in the moments (specifically the way she set the scene) and a lot of the quotable moments were really touching. But I thought the overarching scene choice was pretty poor and a lot of the same things could've been achieved in more fluid ways. Also Dov as a character was just horrendous. Not even from like a I didn't like him way (I didn't), but like why did he keep getting written into scenes he didn't need to be in, and why did she like kinda redeem him in the end. It was beyond frustrating.

Tyenomite

Please do house of leaves!

ArcticPete

Really like this inaugural episode, I find it funny that I line up with both Maya and Nick on a lot of the opinions, considering their very different takes. I enjoyed the book a lot but had a lot of frustrations. I think the book had a Sam bias and made Sadie look bad in situations where Sam was being an asshole.

Faye852

wahoo!

Becca

I thought they were ignoring Nick as a bit 😭

ArcticPete

I actually spent a good deal reflecting on Dov because I also hated him and his "redemption" but the more I sat with it the more unfortunately real it felt. A lot of people hold on to connections with people they probably shouldn't and someone who is 90% toxic can still have a "good" side to them. Doesn't make me like the character but more at peace with the decision. I also stand with you; the cause and execution of the death was corny but the chapter itself was really good and I felt like thematically he had to be removed for the character arcs to really shine

Lizz

I love how Nick slowly creeps out of frame as the episode goes on

Pnwoah

I am with Nick on this one. I sobbed while reading it, but I thought I'm just PMSing lol

Haiku

While I can see your point from the standpoint of Sadie, I still don't see it from the way it was written. Like not only does Sadie give him a pass which could be believable, but the narrator also seems to be okay and make sure that Dov is seen as okay at the end of the book. I also just thought it felt kind of lazy how comically tropey their lives were at the end like: cancer, abortion, abuse, dead husband, mass shooting bc homophobia, combined with dead parent, savant, physical disability, have a relationship built on miscommunication, was kind of crazy. If anything Sadie's flaw is that she always feels second fiddle to other people and lashes out bc of it. But that's because most of the time she just is. Her relationship with Dov could've been one where he was a self-starter who genuinely cared for her but she couldn't feel it because she saw herself as not in control. That leads her to Sam and makes asking for the game engine far more emotional.

Squatch

My e-reader broke so I can't look it up, but the paradox Sam was doing his thesis on in the begining kinda clued me in on thinking Sam and Sadie were essentially the same person, Sam with his boy autism and Sadie with her girl autism, one left brain one right, understanding each other but refusing to communicate, and Marx filling the same roll for Sam and Sadie being their bridge to other people.

Shelby

I cried so much during the coma death. The peach trees send off was so beautiful and sad.

Allison A

excited to see commentary about a book I know nothing about

Valentine Castro

I was so damn immersed in this podcast. The hour flew by so fast. I really hope y’all keep doing the book club.

Angela Reyes

Not a book I'd read on my own, but I actually enjoyed it a lot. I also cried a lot lol

Don

Nick repeating his joke multiple times when people couldn't hear him was so funny

Angela Reyes

Also love that QT had all these quotes prepared!

Sid Raghunandan

wait am I in the wrong tier?? what is this. Where am I

Adrian

YAYYY IM SO EXCITED FOR BOOK CLUB

MatthewBoltz

they actually got me reading books again

Vina Ann

never was part of a book club before & it makes it so much more fun to hear others’ different perspectives after reading the same book i really did enjoy the vast difference of maya & nick’s thoughts on the book nick crying over the parts where they were successful in their work was really nice to hear about c:

Ruben

This was amazing, I'm really glad I got into reading again because of the book club. I think this was a great book to start with, I would give it an 8.5, I cried. Do we know what the next book will be yet?

Michael Hendrickx

"House of Leaves" I think. It didn't sound like that confirmed it cus they couldn't decide the next date

Michael Hendrickx

Marx kinda needed out of the picture, Sam and Sadie had to reconnect without him

Catherine Joyce

I bought a copy of Tomorrow, and Tomorrow and Tomorrow ages ago, but never got around to reading it. Glad that the book club gave me the push to actually pick it up and read it.

Ruben

I think it won't be any of the books mentioned in the podcast itself, from what I got he will specifically look for a book that is also in audio form. I just thought this was recorded some days ago, so that we would now know which book it will be.

wineaboutit

The next book will be announced on Twitter and in a separate post here on Patreon as soon as it has been decided.

linda

this was awesome, a lot of my thoughts on this book were mentioned (by different people at times no less), felt very well rounded. getting the worlds greatest gamer soft launch was funny lol. also i’ve actually owned house of leaves bc of college and never read it lol but i wouldn’t be mad if we chose a different book

SuperPax

I think Nick's addition was a great call as it felt like he really rounded out the cast well. I'm sure I'd have enjoyed it without him but as someone who also cried to this book in the moments absent of death I felt like I connected most with his experience with it.

SuperPax

I thought they were messing with him for the longest time.

BS

One rule I use for my SFF book club is you aren't allowed to give a books a 7. It is such a non answer. 8 or 6 tells you if you liked the book more or not. 7 is what you rate a person's appearance when you don't want to be honest but you don't want to hurt their feelings.

yetiyordeler

I’ve never been in a book club so this was a cool window into one. This was a high quality discussion and went to a lot of different places. The opinion that surprised me the most was Maya’s literary rating 7 surprised me because of how much she hated the characters lol None of my friends are readers so I hope they keep this book club going. I enjoyed having a reason to read and I’m super curious to see what each person will choose as their book!

lia

this was so much fun!!! can’t wait for more book clubs

Morgan T

Yay I really enjoyed this! Can’t wait to see what the next book is!

Samuel Lazar

This is so fucking fun. Unironically so great. Fav Patreon thing on Wine about or the Yard.

Hollie

This book was out of my usual reading scope so hearing everyone's takes has been interesting and actually made me rethink on how I interpreted the story. I am absolutely looking forward to future book club content!

dee

I LOVE BOOKCLUB PLS KEEP DOING THESE!!! tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow was my fav book of 2023 and I loved hearing this group chat about it. nick and I enjoyed the same parts of this book for sure. slime's thoughtfulness was really genuine and appreciated! it's such a solidly written book, the characters were complex and weird and relatable and hateable haha I definitely also felt very seen by so many parts it was honestly very surprising. KEEP DOING THESE 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

Denise

This was a lot of fun. The bookclub gave me the motivation I was lacking to read more. I think the characters were very dynamic and relatable in their own ways. With Sadie in particular I could get annoyed/mad at her depressive episodes meanwhile reflecting on my own behavior when feeling that way. Anyway, I hope there will be more book club gatherings in the future!

Kate Clawson

I loved so much that everyone connected with different parts of this book and seeing their different perspectives. This is such a great group for a book club and I’m so excited for more episodes. Thank you for doing this!

ConEG

been looking forward to this since the announcement. an Audiobook Cheater as well, listened during a weekend with long car rides and like nick had multiple moments it moved me to tears (it’s not fun to drive while crying btw!) my thoughts are kind of a mashup of everyone’s; i found parts of myself in sam but also found elements of him insufferable, really wished sadie and him learned how to properly communicate (but that is the tragedy of their friendship), and found the segment when marx is dying in the hospital to be the strongest part of the book. the Gamer Stuff did bother me so i’m glad to hear the author said she messed with things for the purpose of the story to work (using the phrase “ground pound” for the original super mario bros somehow was the worst of that to me) nice pick slime, felt good to “read” again since i haven’t been able to enjoy a book since casually getting through the hobbit in college

Jenni 842

I’m excited for next month’s book!

mich

i thought they were just all collectively ignoring nick in the beginning

Sun

I see myself in Sam because I’m a introverted pos and want sugar daddy Marx to give me attention and take care of me

Manuel Raymundo

So funny u guys picked this book because about a year ago i read this for a book club that ironically was for a small twitch/discord community im in, listening to this was incredibly entertaining and brought back memories of similar discussions i had with my book club💀 slime’s analysis in particular was a pleasant surprise and i enjoyed hearing everyone’s take on it

Aleshia

I listen to audiobooks constantly - when you listen to them a lot I think your hearing speed naturally goes up. My minimum speed is 1.5, anything below is too slow, and often times I’ll listen on 2x :)

Carly Lane

My notes I took while reading, posting before watching so my takes might be shit who knows. The first look you get at Sam through how he talks about himself/Sadie makes him seem like an insufferable redditor. Solutions is a banger game concept. The writing moving forward does not match that initial description/ internal dialogue we get of Sam. Very interesting use of omniscient narratives/ narrator. Getting the nurses thoughts was cool. 90% of the perceived issues Sadie and Sam deal with in this novel can be solved my better communication. Both of them need to grow the fuck up and talk to each other about their issues. (They kind of do a lot later) As a 25 year old myself the level of ridiculous insecurity and self righteousness they both exude is so fucking annoying. I understand trauma effects these things but realistically if Sadie is having this many issues with Sam, bringing them up and discussing them even in a professional point of view is better than whatever the fuck they are doing. Otherwise so far the writing is making me happy and I very much enjoy the story even if the characters are pissing me off. Blaming Sam for getting back into a RELATIONSHIP with Dov is fucking stupid. Really play up women not having any autonomy or self control why don’t ya. I think I’m supposed to be mad. I think introducing that Sam is romantically In love with Sadie is reductive to the themes of friendship and the struggles that can come with your best friend being your business partner Ouch. Marx dying is a turning point for me. The book has always been entertaining but it now feels substantial. The scene where Sam plays Oregon Trail and starts to talk to the Sadie in his head is very good. Playing on what his grandma taught him about dealing with loss and that she converses with her daughter in her head being used for Sam and Sadie made me tear up a little. The last 30-40% of the book were the strongest and most impactful. Both characters learned how to deal with their trauma and realized that their love for each other would never fully die. I like that they did not get together romantically and it was a very wholesome ending. Some of the reviews for this book call it pretentious. I’m tired of hearing it about books that aren’t treating readers like dumb idiots. The writing is very good, the flow of the plot was pleasing to my monkey brain, and the formatting of the chapters/sections worked very well. Marx’s death scene was my favorite part by far. The jumping around made it much more emotionally impactful. Beautifully written and made me cry. 4.5/5 book for me.

Cameron

This was such a fun episode! I read this book for a class of mine earlier this year and it was interesting to hear everyone's takes.

Jaded Kills

Marx getting shot LITERALLY did not bring Sam and Sadie back together. It drove them farther apart than ever.

jwynter

okay I know I'm late to the party, but Maya's reading method is GENIUS. I need to give that a try.

I’ve been waiting with bated breath for November’s ep
