Over 1 year someone on the ISS would only be 0.01 seconds younger than someone on earth. You have to go much much faster to get a significant difference. This is a rough calculation but at around 175,000 miles per second 1 year on earth would be about 120 days for someone on the ISS.

that space listener is ME!!! and yes interstellar could be accurate in ways but at that speed it wouldn't be do much on the ISS (its more like by milliseconds) they would have to be going close to the speed of light for it to affect time that much

As someone who works for JPL and works with folks from NASA often, there are plenty of people that I work with that don't like thinking about the vastness of space and how small we are. So the reaction that Maya has when space comes up is something you think you would not see at JPL/NASA but its more common than you think.

Space girlie here, I worked at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory for a hot minute and I'll tell yah most of us get freaked out by space too. In my first class in the field, Stars and Galaxies, my professor would teach us messed up facts about how out Sun will die or how the universe is expanding. Then he would always end the lecture with, 'And now you have to care about your homework due Friday, so don't go too far down that existential crisis!' It sucked lol

Also a girlie in the space industry and honestly I love thinking about space and how small we are. I do hate thinking about how 1) we’re creating so much space debris (shit we just leave in orbit that serves no purpose because it costs more to bring it back and dispose of it than to just leave it there) and 2) how we’re trying to turn space into a commercialized and militarized hellscape :)
