to be honest, Katie (from the academic story) sounds like EVERY older person I've ever known at a job who is A) good at the primary job, B) thinks they've put in the time and are management material/due for a promotion, C) is NOT management material/due for a promotion because they are miserable to be around, not a people person, and are old enough to be 100% stuck in their ways and shameless about it.
