Mike White can’t write on race. Neither Paula or Belinda felt like actual people. They simply existed so Mike White could write shallow commentary on rich white people exploiting people of color. Both of those women were not given an opportunity to exist outside of that narrative. Take Armond for example. He’s a very complex character who is both a part of the exploitation and a victim of it. He’s given far more depth. Thankfully season 2, Mike White doesn’t try to write on race and it’s much better.

yeah he kinda just makes them sound like white people who are into social justice and are kinda awkward. black ppl who are into race politics generally just don't phrase what they say the way they say it and don't use the words they use. like idk how to explain it but paula and belinda ARE literally just two white left wingers played by poc. I think Mike was better with Armond because he is bisexual and also because he, on his own accord, over indulges in drinking sometimes. So it was kinda like he was writing a Euphoria-ized version of himself; which is probably why Armond seems to be the deepest character in the show.

Thats literally the point though. They don't speak the same way as actual minorities because they don't have the lived experience. They're exactly how he intended them to be ....it's not an accident or bad writing.

Being from Hawaii I was sad the location changes in the next season but Season 2 ended up being so much better! Can't wait for you guys to see!

I commented this before but you’re going to realize that season 1 is about money, season 2 is about sex and 3 is going to be about spirituality. They are filming right now in tailand. Can’t wait to watch with you season 2!!!🤍🤍🤍

@Jermonster: IDK if you're responding to the OP or the person above but The POC characters were not written with as much care and depth as the white characters. I don't think it's bad writing it's just a very noticeable difference between characters that felt real like Tanya and Armond specifically vs Belinda and Paula. Even with Shane and Rachel you got a good idea who they were along with Mark, Quinn, etc. When you compare that to the characters in season 2, the lack of characterization for Belinda and Paula is even more noticeable. Unfortunately, a lot of white writers tend to suffer from this. Otherwise, this is a great show.

I didn't watch the full length watchalongs for this season but I definitely will for season 2 because Italy is my favorite place to visit and the show is too beautiful to miss.

I think this is a whole reach. It was pretty clear that Belinda wasn’t a main character the way Mark or Quinn were. They had far more scenes/lines to fletch out their character. Olivia also didn’t have any more character depth than Paula - I’d say she had less. Paula was shown both as vapid/shallow yet empathetic and reflected. Some characters just were more fletched out than others but definitely not relating to race. Shane was a walking, one-dimensional stereotype of a rich entitled douche and nothing more.

season 2 is actually a completely different cast and white lotus resort location in Italy, and its THE SEASON. Im actually surprised none of you watched it, it was a massive collective watchalong in the states when it was on, people would gather for "White Lote Sunday" lol. Cant wait!
