I currently live on the island this film is about, Phuket Thailand. Im moving to the mainland of Thailand next month (for several reasons) but also because I'm scared of something like this happening again LOL

I was 9 when this happened, living in Sweden. Thailand was a very popular holiday destination for families and adults, and several family friends were there. My uncle decided last minute to come home for Christmas, and I remember watching the news with him on boxing day and my mom crying. My moms boyfriend was there with his kid. They just missed the train that was going to the mountains, but the train was hit by the second wave and they survived. I can't imagine being or living there when this happened, all the love in the world sent to you that were.

This movie is so well made and absolutely heartbreaking. Another horrific movie about a rather recent tragedy is the Norwegian "Utöya 22 juli". It's about the Utöya summer camp mass shooting in Norway in 2011 where 77 people, most of them teenagers, were killed and a lot more injured. The movie is unique since it is shot in a single take in real time (the same amount of time as the shooting actually went on) which really puts you in the center of it all. And when I think about the making of the movie realizing it is a single take I find the acting to be extraordinary. Also - there is a Netflix movie about the shooting called 22 July, which is okay but a completely different kind of movie and not the one I'm talking about.

knowing this is a real story, all the characters are real is what makes this movie even more intense! amazing choice! (to answer the question how many people died almost 327thousand people :-(

This story & all the survivor stories from this tsunami are just incredible. I remember there was a Czech supermodel, Petra, vacationing in Thailand (where this movie is set) with her fiancé when this tsunami hit & unfortunately her fiance died & she survived by hanging holding onto a palm tree for HOURS with broken bones & multiple internal injuries- so that scene where the mom first holds the tree & SCREAMS in agony while the water continues to hit against her makes me think of how painful that must've been physically & mentally! Petra now has an organization that helps with tsunami aid & relief!

I read an article about the similarities in the movie and the real event and to my surprise, the movie is incredibly accurate! The mom and Lucas were separated together and the dad and the other two boys were together as well. They all reunited at the same hospital the movie was filmed at! Even the little boy Daniel was real as well. This movie has stuck with me for a long time, loved the reaction! P.S. Zuff, unfortunately you were way off with your 500 people death toll estimation. Over 200,000 people died :(

Do movies not have full watchalongs or is that just TV shows?

I don’t think satellite can detect what happens under the ocean floor when two plates shift. It’s easy to predict weather hurricane etc but volcanos or plates shifting is not which is why natural disaster s are so terrifying cause they can happen anytime

I remember every moment of this. It was on CNN that it had happened but they knew so little. We didn’t have smartphones or social media then. I had a friend who had flown to India the day before to get married in a coastal town (her fiancé was Indian and she was from the U.S.). I was freaking out as CNN got tiny bits of info over the next couple hours. I don’t know why I thought of it, but I dug out my mom’s computer manual and called customer service. A very nice man from India answered. His name was Suraj. He told me his family was safe. They lived inland. I explained about my friend and that CNN said 10,000 people had died. He told me the latest toll was more than 40,000. He stayed on the phone with me for hours, trying to find information about the town where she was. He gave me all the updates as he got them. Everything he told me would come out on CNN about an hour later. In between, we talked about our families and he told me about his friends that were trying to reach their loved ones. He got information that there didn’t seem to be a lot of deaths where my friend was, not like in other areas on the coast. After a few hours, we hung up. I didn’t hear from her for a few days. She was okay, as was her new husband’s family. Their hotel was destroyed and she injured her neck and couldn’t speak for a few weeks. But they went inland and had a beautiful little ceremony (they videotaped it for all their friends back in the U.S.). Since my friend couldn’t speak, her sister said her wedding vows for her. I’ll forever be grateful to Suraj for helping me that day!
