This is so random for this particular comment section but cigarettes were invented in the late 1500’s….that’s all I had to say

so some spoiler free thoughts + historical context....the baby duke is handed to his father because in that time, he was considered his father's "property", not his mother's child, but an asset, a piece of property, of his father. the girls at this time are kept in the dark about all things pretaining to sex and where babies come from. when i studied this time period in college we actually learned the husbands would sleep with the wives once in awhile for making a baby but would go sleep with prostitutes because the "ladies" of the time were to be kept so "pure and innocent." it's really screwed up. especially because these young girls would get to their wedding nights being told essentially nothing. they were so unprepared for everything all in the guise of keeping them "pure." during the social season, there are balls all the time. this is a period of a few months for finding a husband and courting. in the "off season" the rich society retires to their other homes in the country. but during "The Season" they spend time in the city in hopes of finding husbands and marrying off their daughters. Antony is trying to find someone he thinks is worthy of Daphne. he doesn't know of lord burbrooke's actually personality at the start. he just knows what he's been told which is "he's never harmed an animal or a woman." he thinks he's a good match and will be "safe" for daphne. he thinks the duke isn't a safe bet because they were little f-boys in their college days (something daphne alludes to and calls out when she's introduced to the duke in episode one) and even now. so he thinks that the duke isn't worthy of daphne because he knows him best and knows all his faults. he thinks he's doing the right thing. oh anthony.... i LOVE lady danbury. she is such a badass. i love how we see in these first two episodes that she's absolutely terrifying to those that cross her, but she has such a soft spot for those who need her. she's definitely a person you'd want to take you under her wing. she takes no shit from anyone. "shit gets done when you're not involved anthony." LMAO. i love anthony bridgerton but this made me genuinely laugh out loud. anthony needs a good bit of bullying sometimes lol ugh the duke's father makes my skin absolutely crawl. sooo thankful simon got away from him and was brought up by someone as good as lady danbury. sadly, this was not uncommon for father's to behave like this. at this time, if a child proved to be "undeseriable" they were sent away, out of sight and out of mind. simon was a "lucky one" in that he was sent away with caretakers and not just given over to a sanitarium or some such thing. "speak you fucking monster" gives me chills every. single. time. holy shit. the actor that plays simon is just so, so good!! another really amazing episode and great reaction :)

I'm sorry, was I the only one laughing when they kept saying balls? 😂

Michelle

The way that Simon's father treated him shattered my heart. It makes complete sense why he never wants to get married, I honestly don't blame him. I'm loving these reactions so much and getting your thoughts on the storyline/characters! Eloise is definitely one of my favorites as well, I feel awful for her that she is trapped in this type of society. Can't wait for more reactions/reviews!!

Ashley Kinney

So the reason why Daphne was going to give in to marrying Burbrook was because he threatened to spread a rumor that she was alone on the Dark Walk with him. In this time period, if there was even a rumor of an unmarried woman being alone with a man, it would ruin her and no one would want to marry her.

Ashley Kinney

Most of the unmarried “ladies” do not know how babies are made because no one ever tells them anything about sex, that would be “improper.”

Ashley Kinney

As a side note, this series is based on a book series and each book is a different Bridgerton sibling’s story. Each sibling’s name starts with a different letter of the first eight letters of the alphabet: Anthony, Benedict, Colin, Daphne, Eloise, Francesca, Gregory, and Hyacinth

Megan the Librarian

AND it would taint her sisters' reputations as well. So in a way she's sacrificing herself in hopes that Eloise, Francesca, and Hyacinth will have better luck when it's their turn.

Nana

i wish you guys would pay attention to what they're speaking cause they're literally explaining why daphne has to to marry nigel, but yall just talking all over it

Nana

nigel is reminding them that he and daphne were alone together in the garden which people can imply they did physical acts (including kissing), which is not allowed before marriage. if such thing happened, they must marry or nigel should be dueled (anthony would have to fight him and one shall die).

exactly!!! so much is riding on her/her reputation. i think it's even stated several times that it's daphne that's paving the way and setting the tone for her sisters. that quote from the first episode about burning is so relevant. she has the "power" to set the tone to attract good suitors for her sisters or to set the tone for her sisters to have no future prospects. it's all riding on her, on her reputation. the society is watching her and judging not only her but the rest of the bridgerton *gags but this is how society views them then* stock.

emily ღ

i also want to jump in here and add that not only relevant to this episode but there's so many little things that are brought up that may come back later in the season or even be mentioned in the next season. even if it seems minuscule it's still important to heed these details lest there be confusion later down the road. there's so many characters and personalities and little almost easter eggs for the viewers that it's important to really listen to get the full story and know what may be going on. just a little heads up/word of caution!

emily ღ

exactly!! it's essentially blackmail. he knows if any word gets out, daphne and sadly by default, her sisters could be seen as a "ruined woman" and therefore lose all prospects. he's backing them into a corner. a powerless little man who has found a small glimpse of a stronghold and is lording it over this family. to put it mildly, he sucks!!!

That’s the thing, though…them talking a bit over the dialogue is part of their reaction so it’s valid. I don’t think they should have to be completely silent just because you or somebody else feels like they are missing important information. This show is pretty easy to follow, though the guys do need to be filled in regarding the social norms of the time (like, yes, Pen and Eloise were completely ignorant as to how babies are conceived, and Daphne being seen alone with a man could ruin her and her entire family’s reputation during that time period). That’s the cool thing about the comments section—we can help fill them in or clarify things. :)

Nana

I’d rather them pause the video for their comments, whats the point of talking over the important dialogues- its a reaction!
