If something is possible, and you have a record of it, just mmmaaaybe it can be reverse-engineered? No harm in trying, Max thinks.

Tanall

Magic is simply science that has yet to be understood ^.^

Now imagining Max trying to mimic Mink's pose and movement in front of metals trying to convert them later just in case it's all about the hips.

Mark Ashworth

Max may start with doing the work himself (presuming he can... I remember an earlier story where they discovered he's missing an important factor or quality?) but once he gets the vital info he'd move on to automated production as quickly as possible. The ability of create large quantities of rare minerals from cheaper elements, hopefully without creating toxic or hazardous byproducts? I think the Mink is grossly undercharging him.

Skunkupine

"rare earths" aren't all that rare, they just don't occur in a few nice easily mined veins, but rather in low concentrations in a LOT of dirt. Rather than transmutation, he'd be better served with a filtering spell to extract them from the existing deposits.

McClaw

Called it. (The "rarer elements" thing.) And of course Max wants to "watch".

Sharing the secrets of arcane alchemy isn't too risky . . . and if one can advance the right forms of technology--say nano-tech--to the appropriate levels, manipulating the atomic structure safely "shouldn't" be too big of a problem. Course, having access to ultra-rare materials such as the legendary "neutral matter" couldn't hurt either.
