Historic fun fact: Italy wasn't united since 1871. Each city had a different language (and that's where the dialects we are using today come from) so to understand each other during the trade that took place between the different cities, the merchants instinctively invented a kind of sign language, accompanying the words with hand gestures and exaggerated expressions, to understand each other.

If you want to understand better what I mean, this is a VIDEO in which a tourist guide explains some gestures to a couple of American tourists. It's pretty funny and also VERY TRUE! XD XD XD

This language has spread among the population (I imagine because the merchants also gestured outside of trade by habit) and some us still use a little of this funny language.
