Can we all just take a minute so welcome some of my grandchildren into the world :)
I really hope I can keep them alive, I feel the pressure!
Just can't believe I have to raise my daughters children cause she wants to eat them, mothers eh.

Congrats! :D All the best to your family!

Interesting, but the only conclusion I see is that no one really knows: <a href="https://www.livescience.com/2053-animals-eat-offspring.html" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.livescience.com/2053-animals-eat-offspring.html</a>

Hmm, it is a strange one. You'd think they'd want to protect their babies!

The final suggestion seems the most likely, that they are purging the hatchlings of the least likely to survive. Elephants, and other species, have been known to push their newborns out of the group and abandon them to be captured by predators. They seem to know within a short time if their offspring will be able to survive. I remember a case where a baby elephant born in captivity was abandoned by its mother, who refused to nurse it. When the professionals removed the baby and tried to raise it elsewhere, all seemed to go well until sometime afterward when the child started to show signs of health problems not evident previously.
