Didn't like USB power at first, but if it ends up working that well, I don't mind it :)

Oh I think we still don't have any ladies here ...

Prototype: TS80 USB-C soldering iron - A TS100 Successor?

TS100: http://bit.ly/2tscVQW QC3.0 Power bank: http://bit.ly/2MkUepb Banana ruler: https://twitter.com/jon_raymond_/status/981924976650407936 Power Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/marcoreps New station: https://www.welectron.com/PACE-ADS200-AccuDrive-Soldering-Station e-Design have sent me their latest development: A TS80 prototype! The name suggests a step back in size, power, price?? but how does it actually perform? I am taking it apart and putting it through its 'paces' to find out why in the world they decided to make it USB-powered.

Well, that’s not 100% true. My wife is a regular co-viewer of your videos - she is not into electronics, but also a fellow maker- and appreciates the creativity, fun and wit 😊

I personally know a few trans-women who are into this stuff :) I guess it helps when you're brought up through childhood as if you were a boy? Definitely don't be all dismissive of the female audience like a certain Australian does ;)

Marco Vujevic

Yes, it *can* be hard to keep PACE with the developments lately... :P

That was very impressive. Do you have any comments on how it compares with a butane iron? I'm just a dabbler, but I hate cables for handheld tools, so have always used a butane torch. A pain to fill up and avoid getting burnt on the exhaust, but handily doubles as a heat gun or blowtorch for a frugal dabbler like myself.

I'm actually quite excited about the USB-C power here: I have plenty of USB-C power supplies these days, some of which are capable of 20V 3A output (and maybe some even 5A, need to check). And I usually have at least one of the lower-power adaptors in my bag already.

Marco!!! This was a one of your best videos so far. It has the same charm from your first videos that initially made me subscribe. Keep it up ♥️

John McCormick

I imagine the TS1 soldering iron will be even more amazing!

with the "ooh aah!", knobfeel has some competition ;o) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E9FzJ4lUcwQ

Hm a butane iron is something I haven't used in years ... It doesn't heat up as quickly, but it does regulate temperature much better obviously. But if it works well for you, all the better

marcoreps

Well I am actually hoping they are trying the other direction next. I want a big powerful truncheon with 18650 cells in the handle :)

marcoreps

It is probably the way to go, all these differently shaped DC barrel connectors were horrible. BUT I think they have to use another USB C connector on the board, one with big solderable anchors to prevent breaking in the near future

Daddy Bearcat

One of those would be very nice for the toolbox. Or the glove compartment. Or the pocket... Hmm...

Leonid Nemiro

I wonder... Can you power it with your phone?

Great device, in case that USB PD standard take off. I loved the convenience of just having a XT60 to barrel connector and running it off a 4S Lipo

Oh, BTW, do I understand correctly that it would be easier to adapt a JBC cartridge, now that it has 3 (4?) wires going to the tip?

marcoreps

Yes! A separate pin just for the thermocouple is exactly the 'JBC way'! But a more powerful mosfet wouldn't hurt :)
