Greetings folks! After some unforeseen delays I've got a rather long-awaited video for y'all: it's time to talk about my main synthesizer setup. ALL OF IT.

https://youtu.be/UgNqzbcr2Pw

Well, maybe not absolutely everything but a whole lotta stuff is touched on here. Analog and digital synths, drum machines, eurorack, mixing, compressors, scopes, switchers, and way more bleep, bloops, and bops than you can shake a stick at. And naturally, this is one of those videos where I completely intended for it to be a general overview that'd be like 15 minutes long, max. And I guess it still kind of is? But here we are with a 55 minute video edited down from like 4 hours of footage. Ha.

And this wasn't even the planned video for this week, I didn't even start on this until Monday! I've been deep into a couple of PC hardware retrospectives that demand a little more research and attention than usual, and neither project is complete yet. I considered just not posting anything this week, but then figured, "hey, people have been asking about my synth corner for over a year now. Why not just make a quick overview of that, piece of cake!"

Welp, it was all I could do not to gush about oscillators for hours and create tons of extra work for myself. I guess I'm a bit more enthusiastic about the stuff than I thought. I didn't go into tremendous detail since I had so many different devices to cover, but hopefully it still proves enlightening/entertaining/ehprettygood.

Back to work on the other things now, enjoy 😁

It's time to talk about my synth setup.

I've put off talking about this stack of synthesizers, drum machines, and audio gear for long enough. Let's dive into the main LGR synth setup and what I do with it! I'm still an amateur with this but here's a bit of a studio tour anyway. Weird electronic music and cool sounds of all kinds, I just can't get enough! ● Take a look at my eurorack modules here: https://www.modulargrid.net/e/racks/view/1413396 ● LGR links: https://www.patreon.com/LazyGameReviews https://www.twitter.com/LazyGameReviews https://www.facebook.com/LazyGameReviews ● Download a folder of the photos and videos here: https://mega.nz/folder/3FgXFIzI#4u6vKETj1xgKtfoJCLlqVw ● Music courtesy of: http://www.epidemicsound.com #LGR #Synthesizers #Music

An hour long LGR video? This is quite the gift!! Seriously though, thanks for taking the time to make such a deep dive into your setup for us, it's definitely something I've been wondering about for a while. Edit: I'm only a few minutes in, but the music in the video is really catchy! Is there any chance you'll upload your creations to Soundcloud or the like so we can listen to them in their entirety?

Not Just Bikes

Oh man, I'm gonna have to set aside some time in the calendar for this one. Nice!

WHAT all my dreams are coming true, can't wait to watch this one! 😁

Bro u am I would be great friends. I started out on a 486 dx2-66 and never forgot. The mortal Kombat theme kept me going through the years. It was the only song I liked back in the day. I love and bled old shit and now I’m a productive video game enthusiast and synth wave and retro producer. My brotha. Good to meet blood carry on

I use a dx70 and old moogs and Juno-60

The setup gives me Brad Fidel vibes.

this is so freaking cool, im with you on analog, ive played a little bit with digital synth on garage band and such, but its not as fun as turning dials and plugging in cables. i've wanted to get into this for a long time, but i have no idea where to start. got any advice or resources for a total synth noob to get started?

Professional DJ there with the horn sample... From one musician to another...this such an awesome vid. Thanks for showing us your setup!

I've always been curious, did you compose the "Vaxeen 4 U" intro song that you used to use? I've always loved that.

I agree with all other comments and want to add that I really appreciate you going into such a personal hobby of yours. I know you mentioned that you liked to keep some hobbies/interests to yourself and thought that your synth work would be something I'd only see on twitter. So its really awesome seeing this video pop up and especially happy to hear you talk about something that really interests you. Those are your best videos. Like my all time favourite is your NFS video of you just sitting and chatting/reminiscing. You're genuinely amazing clint, thanks again!

Clearly, you should get a vintage DAT machine or something as your computer-free recording solution. Or maybe reel-to-reel.

That sammichFM guitar sound is pretty much identical to what Magnetic Fields had all over The Charm of the Highway Strip

I can't watch this video without thinking of Gene Belcher from Bob's Burgers.

I love how you were getting into the beats lol.

eveningdreamer

wouhou that's an impressive setup. thanks for the tour!

"The Sound of Woodgrain" (as said at 20:15) should be the subtitle for the video.

Alyxx the Rat

As someone who is a bit of a synth geek myself, I am envious of this setup. Would love to get something like this set up myself.

you should come talk with chip communities, if you wanna play some more! We welcome anything hardware or simulation related!

Awesome, I've been hoping for a video like this ever since you first dropped some hints of your synth setup in other LGR/Blerbs videos. Sorry if I missed this, but what stand/rack are you using for your Roland TR-8S and TD-3? I have a similar multi-synth desktop setup, and whatever you're using seems to work better than the repurposed laptop stand I'm using now. I visited a friend in Asheville a couple of summers ago and was stoked to be able to tour the Moog factory--really awesome experience. Although it did inspire me to buy a Moog Grandmother a couple months later, so yeah, I can definitely understand the danger inherent in having them nearby.

Loved it. I cant play the piano myself, so i Allways just used the presets and build in Rythm tracks on my brothers keyboard to make some fun. I do like your setup though, reminds me of Jean Michell Jarres analog setup. And your demos sounded Nice.

This was perfect to have playing in the background while I worked on my computer project, the synthy goodness made me feel like a hackerman hahahah

Personally I just started by watching a whole lotta YouTube! Andrew Huang, Ricky Tinez, Loopop, LOOK MUM NO COMPUTER, Hainbach, Alex Ball, Noir Et Blanc Vie, BoBeats, and many more. Feels like I learned through osmosis.

I've got an R2R that I plan to put to use with this. If not for recording, then at least for a bit of tape delay! Love the sound of good tape.

Oh nice, I've been eyeing the Grandmother for a long time. If I had more space to set things up I think I'd have grabbed one by now. Here are the little stands I'm using, which are actually sold as laptop stands: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004HJ1ZB8

Thank you! I'm somehow never happy with the way my demonstrations sound, I probably recorded some of those segments four or five times before settling on one.

Thanks for sharing your set up! Makes me want to buy more non-Daw outboard equipment. You are right there is something pleasing about physical faders and control knob!

So, which one's the fart button? We all know you've got one hidden in there somewhere.

AJPRIME TECH

Quite the synth setup, Clint!! I want a prophet 5 rev2 or rev3 because they use Z80 CPU and I think it looks really cool!! That machine was quite a beast!! Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel, and even the Stranger Things Soundtrack used the Prophet!! They are not cheap to find original, but Sequential (the company who made it) has created a re-release with modern features and amenities like true MIDI support, better sound stability, and the same amazing tone!! Here's a link to the history of the darn thing lol: https://youtu.be/Ruh0B5QKBMs
