So this project came together smoothly! And was even smoother to edit and render thanks to the resulting PC here.

Yep, wasn't sure if I'd be making a video about this or not since modern machines aren't the usual LGR fare. But I recorded the whole process anyway just in case, then decided to go through with it after receiving the encouragement from you here on Patreon and over on Twitter!

This is by far the most powerful computer I've ever assembled, and wow, what a fantastic step up. I've been putting it through more and more benchmarks and tests each day since recording what you see in the video, and it hasn't yet broken a sweat. Although really, the fact that it cut my video rendering times to a quarter of what they were before is good by me. Then there's just the overall more efficient editing process with things like much smoother high-res scrubbing, encoding Cineform proxies, applying and tweaking effects in real time, and loading all my footage across an array of lightning fast drives. It's a load off my creative shoulders, seriously, and it's encouraging me to try a few new things that were more cumbersome before.

Anyway enjoy the build vid, and I hope you have a nice and safe week!

Building a New LGR Editing PC! Threadripper 3970X

Let's build a new Windows 10 computer! Specifically, a work PC for creating LGR videos and other intensive audiovisual tasks. My i7-6700K machine was getting a bit sluggish for editing large 4K 60fps video projects, so this AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3970X build will be a massive improvement. ● Pertinent linkage: https://www.patreon.com/LazyGameReviews https://www.twitter.com/LazyGameReviews https://www.facebook.com/LazyGameReviews ● Parts list: AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3970X Processor MSI Creator TRX40 Motherboard Corsair Vengeance LPX 128GB (4 x 32GB) DDR4-3600 RAM EVGA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER FTW3 2TB+1TB+1TB Samsung 970 EVO Plus NVMe M.2 4TB Samsung 860 QVO SSD Be Quiet! Very nice! And a good coincidence, I'm about to build my brand new PC, as well, today. This will be a nice companion while I assemble :D

Anonymous

I'm watching this in 4K even though I don't have a 4K monitor on my PC so your efforts are not wasted on my part. Great build vid always appreciated regardless of modernity.

Anonymous

Now you have something to make a video about in 20 years

SantaClaw

I have the same case, (well the XL version) I've been using it for years, excellent case. :)

Adam Baxter

You can get a SATA to USB3 cable that'll work fine with that old SSD and make a very fast flash drive, should you need it. I have one with a Windows To Go install and one with Ubuntu (not liveUSBs, actually installed)

LazyGameReviews

I've got one that I used to copy over the files off that SanDisk drive! Works well in a pinch indeed :)

LazyGameReviews

Heh, true that! I can only imagine the nonsense we'll have in two decades from now. Two decades ago a 1GHz Pentium III was current and the 1.4GHz P4 was on the horizon. Dual core seemed like a dream. Now we've got 32 and 64 cores. How far we've come!

LazyGameReviews

Nice, I really like Fractal Design cases. I've built a few PCs for friends using some of them as well!

Anonymous

I love how you think a i9 would be a better budget cpu and a 2080 isn’t the best gaming card. That last part is true I guess, as there is 1 card better.

LazyGameReviews

The i9-9900KS beats this Threadripper in all sorts of games and costs half a grand less. Plus you don't have to disable a buncha cores to get certain games to work, it's an all-around better choice for gaming :) The 2080 Ti XC is a step or two above the 2080 Super, that's true, especially in RTX.

Anonymous

You did an amazing job sir, I'm sure glad the advice was taken to heart!

Anthony Bruscella

Is your video card running at full 16X on that slot?

Phakorn Sripayak

I like how you just skipped the thermal paste application shot. LOL

Anonymous

Hum, ripping some threads you are.

Anthony Bruscella

Great build and seeing as all slots are x16, good call on the cooling fan, better to be safe than sorry!

LazyGameReviews

Agreed! Kinda makes me wonder what folks are supposed to do with SLI setups on that board. I guess it's probably meant to be covered, but I still don't like it 🤷‍♂️

Vladimir Vyun

Wow, that's cool stuff. Congrats with the upgrage! *Whispers quietly to himself* I am not jealous... I am not jealous... I am not jealous...

PiraTed

Me who still rocks a i7 920 from 08. DAMN SON!!

Anonymous

Oh dear. makes my 3 year old i7 7700k look like a piece of crap :) And I'm assuming you're not running the memory at the stock 2133mhz like the bios said :)

Anonymous

That is one sexy beast, Clint! But does it run Crysis?

LazyGameReviews

It's got this X-AMP thing that automatically changes speeds based on what mode is selected, from what I gather. I've just been leaving it on "Creator Mode" since it's supposedly optimized for Adobe stuff. With that enabled, the MSI control panel lists it running at 3600MHz :)

Anonymous

Nice build. Computers have come a long way. I remember when I got excited when I got one that remembered the time and date when it was rebooted!

Anonymous

I can't express enough how much I loved this video. We all like the retro content, but this was a refreshing look at something new.

LazyGameReviews

That's a classic at this point! I bet it still does a decent job, I really wanted one of those back then.

LazyGameReviews

Haha, that's still impressive on an old enough machine! The fact that modern operating systems now remember ALL your settings across systems and sync everything in the cloud is mind-boggling.

moosemaimer

I put a bluray drive in my last build, only to discover Windows doesn't have the codecs; and anyone selling software that does wants serious money, more than I spent on a Samsung player.

Anonymous

More people need to see the light about longer screwdrivers. I've got two which are probably 12", one a crosshead, the other flat. That one crosshead is SO useful when doing PC stuff because it can almost reach anywhere. I magnetise my screwdrivers too, so it doubles as a screw catcher. They aren't expensive, and you can get them on eBay for next to nothing. I've even got a couple of Torx long shaft ones - useful for getting into Macs.

LazyGameReviews

The BeQuiet screwdriver was magnetized as well! Super handy, I'm almost more excited about having that than the CPU fan itself.

Anonymous

Great video! I found the first few seconds of you putting all the components on the table strangely satisfying! Greetings from the UK!

Anonymous

Awesome build Clint. No excuse now for getting your vids out quicker. :)

Tim Coffey

Awesome build, Clint. Treat it well.

Anonymous

Who doesn't like big knobs, eh? :D But dude, that was a buttery smooth PC-build video, I'd go as far as to say it's even better than LTT! I could almost smell the new components as you opened them! :D

Anonymous

That is a delightfully chunky sounding power button on that case.

Anonymous

Since most of the videos I watch are about retro builds, it's cool to see how far computers have come in even the last 4-5 years. I'm just glad they can still run SkiFree.

Bryan McIntosh

I remember that Rich Leadbetter of Digital Foundry had said last year that he would occasionally run into issues with GPU memory when working with multiple 4K60 video streams on an 8 GB GPU (or even an 11 GB GPU). In his case, a Radeon VII or Titan RTX actually made sense. Since you shoot in 4K60 now, do you notice the same issue occurring sometimes? Or is it not a problem for your workflow because you generally only have one video stream shown at a time in your videos?

Anonymous

That's a sweet build! Enjoyable entertainment as always. Crazy how you actually went down in VRAM amount, but I'm guessing you won't be limited by that regardless.

Krystal Kamieniecki

A really great and timely (for me) video. I'm selling my house and looking to replace it with a Threadripper based computer.

BastetFurry

And here i still sit with my AMD Phenom II X2 965 Black Edition. Good enough for KiCad and VS Code under Ubuntu i think. ;)

Anonymous

"Quirks and features" - somebody watches Doug DeMuro.

Anonymous

Gorgeous build. Thank goodness for excuses! ;-)

Anonymous

Awesome build! Still have an aging i7-4970K & 980 Ti that can still put up a decent fight and frames, but this year might be when I finally do an upgrade. We'll see though. Scary times in this economy, so happy to live vicariously through you! :)

Anonymous

Good thing that with threadripper it does not matter what 16 slot you set the gpu into 😀

Uncleawesome

AMD cpu on MSI motherboard, that's the way I like it :) Because I loved my MSI k7t266 pro-r with AMD Athlon Thunderbird 1.13ghz :) I also need a new pc. Editing 4k is not a nice experience on i7 2600k

Anonymous

Grr, jealous, I precisely want a 3970X for my next build... just not sure whether to go with it or wait a bit more for what comes next since I don't exactly need a new PC right now, while my good old 5960X is close to 6 years old it still runs everything like a charm (upgraded GPU to 2080S recently though)... I'd have to replace RAM, but DDR5 is "just around the corner...", maybe better to wait another year or so

Anonymous

Totally rad man! I bet those parts cost a samll fortune, but hey, doing all that rendering it is absolutley warranted, and for you, well deserved. I do not have the patience for that, I have been making youtube videos with my iPhone 7+ ha! ....but seriously, awesome. My son (23) is about to build a Ryzen gaming machine from MicroCenter today, for COD Warzone & Fortnite we'll see how it goes!.....I am curious where you bought the license for Win10 and how much ? (I get mine from work volume lic) so I never have to pay, ....and also, 3 M.2 SSD's ....I am weary about using those for storage...what do you need 3 for? RAID? thoughts...great video thank you.

Terry Lee

I've also been using a fractal design case for years and still love it! I don't need as much space as you so I'm using the Fractal Design Define R5 and it's been great. I chose it because it's one of the fewer new cases these days that still has an optical drive bay! As if there are people who still use optical drives! There are and I am one of them! :P

Anonymous

Always enjoyed these 'build' videos, they can make for some pretty chill lunch break entertainment, heh. As for the RGB settings on the motherboard, pretty sure you can disable that through the BIOS. I on the other hand actually prefer RGB lighting so long as it's not too excessive.

Anonymous

I like how you hid your thermal paste application, so no one can tell you did it "wrong." :-P

DFawlt Uzr

I'm a NOC engineer/homelab enthusiast and I am absolutely salivating at your setup because it would make for an incredible server hahaha.

Anonymous

Great video and glad to know your workflow will be greatly streamlined. I went from a 4790K to a 3950X and the performance jump was so drastic I couldn't believe it!

Alyxx the Rat

That is some tech porn right there. Congratulations on your new build!

Carey Brown

*spots mini-nuke on shelf next to gaming PC* *plots trip to steal it* Jokes aside, thanks for making this! It's a great one to showcase why Threadripper isn't for everything and why more CPU cores isn't the answer for "How do I make games run better?"

Anonymous

I felt the same when i upgraded my ancient i7 3370 and 1060 GPU to the 2700x and 2060 Super. The part with Duke Nukem 3D part was hilarious.

Because Why-Nerd

That was just a pleasing video, the color of the board, fan, case. Everything just looked nice... 🤩

ZTK

Threadripper 3970X uses 280W TDP?! That's 3x what your last processor used (91W for 6700K). Is it worth the power bill? /s Edit: Yes, I know how CPUs work and that they don't stay at 100% utilization. Simply impressed by the sheer amount of electrons this CPU can cycle through it at a time.

Anonymous

Ooo...big whoop :p

Anonymous

cool i have a i9 7980 xe welcome to the high core count club

Jason Wellband

Congrats!!! Definitely puts my new build to shame - but I am not editing videos either. You have put a bee in my bonnet to consider letting my Antec SX 1080 case from 2000 retire. With this build I have now, it's the fourth build I've used this case for.

LazyGameReviews

My previous few builds were in older Antec cases! Case design has really evolved for the better.

LazyGameReviews

You have to install their bloatware in Windows to control it. I'd rather go completely without, it's much cleaner that way!

LazyGameReviews

Indeed, the near total lack of 5.25" drive bays is strange these days. Understandable too, but still strange to see!

LazyGameReviews

All the parts were bought through Newegg. I explained exactly what each of the three drives is used for in the video :)

LazyGameReviews

I don't know what editor they use, I've heard of that being an issue in other programs but it's never been a problem for me in Premiere. The only thing I've had run out is system memory on really big projects. 64GB just wasn't enough for a couple of those!

Anonymous

I would wait 12-18 months after DDR5 hits the high-end desktop platforms to dive into it. Give the manufacturers (RAM, CPU, and motherboards) a chance to tune for DDR5 a bit first and get past the early adopters pain points. It'll make your new system that much better for it.

Anonymous

I was really hoping that when you mentioned editing this video on the very machine itself that somehow the camera would pan out from the screen to show you speaking into a mic watching the video itself .... I dunno why, blame Spaceballs.

Anonymous

Love the build, Clint! I wish I could justify that kind of build for myself!

Asaf Sagi

How much did it cost, adjusted for inflation?

Anonymous

Nice build and great video! Want to sell some of your old components? :-)

Anonymous

I’m interested in your Synology and backup setup. Is there a cloud service you are using for offsite?

Anonymous

How skillfully he hid the TIM installation to keep the cries of "YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG" down

Anonymous

Hey Clint! Any chance you're willing to sell any of your old hardware from the previous rig? I'm extremely interested :)

Anonymous

Additionally, VERY SMART idea not to show your thermal paste application - the internet will argue about this no matter what, and you've mitigated that elegantly. :)

LazyGameReviews

Google and Adobe cloud services. With another set of drives stored over where I have my collection.

Anonymous

I think he was hiding the satanic pentagram that he was drawing on the CPU, I hear that gives you an extra 100MHz

Anonymous

Geeze, I've seen that Threadripper, but never thought anyone would actually buy... It's the Neiman Marcus Gold Plated Rolls Royce of computer hardware. Do you think in 30 years Clint III will make a video... "can you believe how much this cost in 2020?"

LazyGameReviews

Oh I have no doubt it'll be worth a far future video. "Can you believe it only has 32 cores?!"

Brian Lawson

Great video. Are there Amazon links for the components?

LazyGameReviews

Nah, I don't have any affiliation with Amazon. But I'll have a listing of parts posted once the video goes public.

Anonymous

Please try the new Flight Simulator on this when it comes out.

Anonymous

That is an absolutely insane build. 128MB of cache?! And what is that, a thousand dollars of new SSDs? So jealous

LazyGameReviews

Yeeeaah... And those were some of the less costly parts. I try not to dwell on the final price of all this, heh. Even if it's a business expense and fits in the LGR budget, it's still the most I've spent on a PC in my lifetime!

naota3k

Wow. Truly impressive workhorse computer!

Anonymous

But, can it run crysis?

Peter Metzger

I love that you call it the mini-fridge monolith, because I named my computer built in an Antec P180 "Refrigerator" and its successor, built in an Antec P280 is called "FRIDGE-II"

Anonymous

An excellent video. I'm still trying to justify a Threadripper build to myself...... heheheh

Anonymous

Hey Clint, I just wanted to apologize for my immaturity that day. I had to get an injection today from VONS ordered by my psychiatrist, so I feel a whole lot better! Look forward to more of your videos, man!

Valora Inverse

Sweet jesus, how tiny those SSDs are is honestly a little terrifying! Still fascinating, though!

Anonymous

I know nothing about computers. And what I have absorbed is just from watching your videos. I literally had no idea what you were talking about in this video, but I enjoyed it thoroughly.
