Always been rather captivated by this machine. Not only was it IBM's first laptop PC and their first with a 3.5" floppy drive, but its industrial design and convertible nature is downright awesome. And that dot matrix printer around the back! Ahh, I love it.

Planning to cover it more in depth in the future, but until then it's a more relaxing event. Unboxing an unused machine, accessories, and documentation, then setting it up and checking out its basic functions. And BASIC function, too.

Setting Up An Unused 1986 IBM PC Convertible!

Found a new old stock IBM 5140 to unbox and set up! MS-DOS 3.21, monochrome CGA graphics, and even an attachable printer that goes around back. Will do a more in-depth video on it later, but for now let's enjoy it like it's 1986. ● LGR links: https://twitter.com/lazygamereviews https://www.facebook.com/LazyGameReviews https://www.patreon.com/LazyGameReviews ● Music credits go to: http://www.epidemicsound.com #LGR #Retro #Technology

Gotta love those early IBM PC's documentation in those small binders. I'm looking forward to that in-depth look later

is the latch of the printer (at 10:43) loose? or is that the actual design? cool unbox vid lgr. :)

I didn't quite get it in there entirely, was just trying to show it quickly. It holds real tight normally!

Mighty Jabba's Collection

That is one handsome machine! I’ll have to admit wondering what a dot-matrix keyboard was though...

What an awesome find. Form factor reminds me of my Zenith ZFL181, but the Zenith has cooler floppies.

Nice! Coincidentally, I lost an auction for a boxed example a few days ago - I’m running out of room for impulse buys though so it was probably for the best. At least, I keep telling myself that...

Nice one, Clint! I've been wanting to get my hands on one of these things for a while but I've got to stop impulse buying old tech. It would complement the IBM 5155 I have rather nicely, I do think. Am curious, if you're able, do you ever plan on obtaining a 5155, if you don't have one already? It's a really neat machine.

LazyGameReviews

Oh dang, how much did it end up going for? Cuz yeah, this one I got was a bit more than I'd bargained for initially

Super neat. I enjoy your unboxings of new old stock like this. The experience of opening a brand new piece of computer anything is entirely different these days!

LazyGameReviews

Thanks! I know it's not everyone's preferred kinda content, but I feel the experience is well worth documenting :)

Classic IBM design on those boxes. They don't look dated at all.

the watermark on the letter from IBM is likely the brand name of the paper used to print it. Nice paper used by businesses is often watermarked like that. although strangely that implies that that letter was a one-off, or IBM was trying to look extra business-y

An IBM unboxing video for a Saturday night? Don't mind of I do. It boggles my mind that a portable PC at that time would have a detachable monitor.

Yes, this is the type of video I like. I made myself a nice grilled cheese sandwhich to enjoy while watching. It's unfortunate that it has some issues, but hopefully those can be fixed. It's refreshing to have another one of these videos after so long, but I did enjoy your videos on the pointing box, and on the my first keyboard.

When you first mentioned there being something with the printer, I thought about the Adam "psu in the printer" issue

You should see if it's covered under warranty and have them fix it. Tell them it was bought as 'new'.

Looking good, have been enjoying these little filler episodes, wish I had held onto some of my old gear, but storage always was an issue while flatting, appreciate being able to watch you bring these things back to life.

I have one of these! It’s my only computer from the 80’s. I have the printer attachment as well at the crt you could plug in. I think it’s pretty neat

Alyxx the Rat

Looking forward to more videos on this thing. I agree it just has a really sleek design that still kinda looks timeless.

You should take this machine in to a coffee place and do one of those retro in action shots with one of the old cameras in the window. Printer and all,

You gotta love how IBM never gave into the color craziness of the 80s and 90s. Always so professional with their stuff. Almost pedantic in a cool way. That printer. Make a cable for it? No! Let's do a dock thing. Looks like a transformer. IBM blue, my favorite color. You got to stop smelling computers. You PC perv 😁

Nothing weird about smelling the goods. My ~15 year old DragonBall books still smell new - can't get enough of that paper + ink smell. Unwrapping and opening a new movie/game is also sensory bliss for the nose.

I look forward to seeing that printer in action - It sure is compact, never mind for a dot matrix! One thing's for sure, modern laptops are getting smaller and lighter and printers are getting larger and heavier.

Wish I had known you wanted one of these. I had one in pristine condition I gave away just a couple of months ago because I didn't think I'd ever get around to doing a video on it and it was taking up space.

moosemaimer

Those prices for the extra ports... you'd think this thing was made by Cisco.

Tktagmedia

That's a really nice find... though I think the seller was took a little generous in their definition of brand-new.

Great video I don't see this machine talked about that much ( =
