Still taking a bit of a break behind the scenes (as described here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Gztub4_ZvI) but I put this GUS video together before I headed off into an oceanic sunset.

Hope you enjoy! It's a video I've been planning for years in bits and pieces, although the past month has been the brunt of the work.

It's been a long time, but I think I bought one of these specifically for Future Crew's Second Reality demo and for its MIDI capabilities. I also tried my hand at tracking music with it, which I was terrible at. Ultimately, I went back to SoundBlaster cards after not too long a time w/ the GUS due to compatibility/support. I still have their knock-off PS1 controller though! :) Edit: Oh wow, that's crazy how they've retained/gone up in value! Nice shoutout to Jim Leonard too! Love his work on the MindCandy series. Gonna have to dust those off this weekend.

Crazy to think how there were a lot of sound card standards and what card you had could be the difference between audio bliss or nails on chalkboard (That GUS Duke Nukem II music... yeesh).

Sweet! And also Jogeir will be happy you played one of his songs! 🤘🏼😎

Awesome video! You really should put the Ultrasound ACE in your machine with the Soundblaster Pro, and link it up with the MIDI mountain you built, for the ultimate early 90s sonic experience. I mean, if you can have three cards for sound, why not use them?

awesome !!!

I hope you had/are having a good relaxing break! Hope you feel refreshed :) I can see why this card was so exciting back in the day - the sound sounds sooooo good... even with today's tech in mind it sounds good!!! (Well... maybe not Duke Nukem II... lol)

omg! Impulse Tracker! I used to mess around with that And you even had some Jester mods! I'm pretty sure I have a couple Jester mod files still hanging around on my computer.. I remember looking for more tracks from him/her but couldn't find enough info to get more

I got a little wistful watching this one I'll admit.

Aaahh, the memories. Wonderful, wonderful memories. I remember when I got my GUS ACE back in February 1996 and had the same awestruck reaction after hearing it for the first time, it was just that good. And I'm glad that I kept the little red card that sounded so awesome back then - and still does today. https://i.imgur.com/AiQBkpi.png https://i.imgur.com/MwO9Npg.png Yes, it does have its fair share of issues but I consider them par for the course - and have learned to live/deal with them after 22 plus years. Thanks for this wonderful retrospective video Clint, I for one truly appreciate your dedication and effort - you've made this old PC user very happy once again ^_^.

What a great thing to wake up to on my birthday!!! My favourite YouTuber releasing a video on something I absolutely love! Welcome back, Clint! :D

Holy SHIT that difference in audio clarity is MASSIVE! It's like comparing a 64kbps mp3 file to a 320kbps mp3 file. You have to be deaf not to hear the difference!

I'll wait until this is up on YouTube so you hopefully get that tiny bit of ad revenue, but I hope you're having a lovely break!

I remember once going to a guy who had a GUS and watching/listening some Demo scene stuff on it. Wanted one so much.

Great video! My first experience with the GUS was some time after 2005 when I started getting into DOS machines again... Hearing stuff like Epic Pinball or Jazz Jackrabbit on the GUS was a revelation. I have a green Ultrasound clone which works just like the real thing, a GUS MAX and a GUS Extreme and better yet, I got them when the prices were still very reasonable. I never had to fiddle with the clunky emulation tools since the GUS can coexist just fine with a SB compatible card and a wavetable synthesizer if you have enough ISA slots and set up the resources the right way :-)

With the sound quality vs SB16 - I don't think that's any specific GUS stuff. Throw the .psm files into OpenMPT on a modern system with good headphones and you'll hear what I mean

Insinuating that the classic Amiga mods Guitar Slinger and Elysium was written for the GUS. Tut, tut. ;-)
