Easily one of the most fascinating machines I own and I am happy to finally talk about it for a bit! Enjoy the funkiness :)

I remember dying to get one as a teenager, then being glad I didn't shortly after. Exact same story with the OQO! If you can get one of those, it would be a great companion video.

I actually found Alan Yong's Linkedin page: https://www.linkedin.com/in/alan-yong-9b2707a5 Even after Dauphin's failure, he seems to be quite successful today. He co-founded Smokeys Daylily Gardens, a successful flower growing company and DNotes, a digital currency in the likes of Bitcoin.

Wow! I totally had the keyboard from this. I bought it from an electronic surplus store. Always seemed like an interesting small keyboard, and I had no idea what it went to until now!

You know, I think there would be a market for a tablet like device if they could somehow make it more reliable and portable.

LazyGameReviews

Yep, I talked about that in my Strangest 2000s Computers video. Would be curious to try one sometime!

If you think that's terrible, I have an old Windows CE "HPC" in the closet that's just as awful. Imagine Windows 95 on a dim screen with terrible ghosting, and a recording application that uses the worst voice codec I've ever heard. Oh, and Internet Explorer for Windows CE.

Alyxx the Rat

Fascinating piece of shit that is.

Things like this always interest me, it's amusing to see the early attempts at portability. It was probably amazing at the time, and now nobody would be crazy enough to carry something so clunky around

They should have just made the power supply out of the non melting kind of chocolate. just saying.

Very interesting... I would love to start expanding my collection to include some of these older machines... Some day...

So, after putting it in the case, it essentially looks like a laptop... why not just get a laptop? Were they hoping people would hold it and just use the pen?

Apothecarrion

i literally fist pumped when i saw this post, love me some techfunk

BastetFurry

I think as kids we would have loved that device to death and back. Scorched Earth on the school yard? Hell yes! :D

Great review of a forgotten piece of PC history! Seems like one of those things that were so common in the 80s and 90s - great general idea (mobile high powered tablet computing), but just a series of terrible mistakes in execution or just way ahead of the key enabling technologies (lithium ion batteries, efficient touchscreens, low power CPUs...).

Ah yes, unscrupulous nonsense, my favorite software ;). Great video btw!

I wonder how playing Duke Nukem 3d with a stylus on this thing would be like.

Evan B

wow.. this looks like some retro-tech you would have seen in a James Bond film back in the day o_O .. Cool find

What a slice of a failure. Really enjoyed seeing something from an evolutionary dead-end (and for good reason). An excellent look at this one as always :D

floverSaeu09

Is this like a retro tablet?? :D Wow, so cool!!

i remember being so fascinated by the concept of tablet computers as a kid, oh how the times have flown by

Some reason this video not playing - says unavailable deleted.

Well, now I want one of those tiny drives... That's just plain cool. It's also nice to see Cyrix get some attention. Those CPUs were with me through several generations of PCs; starting with my first math co-processor.
