I was just going to be setting up this lovely display up for fun to enjoy some '90s PC games today, but I figured why not film the process and pop up a surprise Wednesday video. Haven't seen many unboxing videos of new old stock monitors so it seemed like it may be worth sharing.

So that's what this is, nothing more nothing less :)

LGR - Unboxing a New 17" ViewSonic CRT Monitor

This is a new old stock Optiquest Q71 display from 2001! Viewsonic made some lovely tubes back in the day and I've wanted one for some time, so I bought this one still sealed. Testing with a Windows 98 PC! ● Consider supporting LGR on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/LazyGameReviews ● Social links: https://twitter.com/lazygamereviews https://www.facebook.com/LazyGameReviews

I once got a 20 inch crt for free, just had to walk it home...it hurt. Still they look awesome, and I would want one if I had the space for it.

All about that base... monitor base that is!🤣🤣🤣... I'll see you in the next one

today I found out LGR has woodgrain floors!

I used to have two of these hooked up to my desktop computer in high school <3

You know, as much as I loved that monitor, I don't miss it. You can't pack them into a suitcase when you travel to the USA.

I haven't used a CRT for anything non-work in several years - can you explain why CRTs make you so happy? I do know that I hooked up my PS2 to an HD LCD and it looks like hot garbage. Similar thing?

A surprise LGR video! Seeing you unbox that Optiquest Q71 CRT monitor brings back memories of the Viewsonic E771 I bought in October 1998. I wanted a Viewsonic monitor so bad back then, and when I saw this one at a computer show for $175 I knew the time had come. Taking it home, opening the box and setting it up with my P233MMX PC was an awesome experience; Unreal, Half-Life, Quake 2, Diablo, Warcraft 2, Descent 2, Whiplash, Doom 2, Tomb Raider, Duke Nukem 3D, they all looked glorious with the E771. This was my PC monitor for quite some time until March 2011 when it finally quit; two electronics repair shops told me it couldn't be fixed, so I reluctantly replaced it with an Acer S202HL that I still use to this day. Thanks so much for making this unboxing video Clint, it was really worth it IMO. Cheers!

I just got a CRT today also. It was a freebee off Craigslist, belonged to some older gentlemen who had quite the collection of things. I got an old 14" Arcus CRT monitor from him, and Windows 98 comes up with a Delta DA570 driver. I was thinking this was going to fix my GLQuake from crashing, but it didn't. The game runs fine and plays for 5min or so even on a LCD but still crashes. Sometimes it just freezes right before booting the game from the 98 desktop. Ya see, I just got my hands on an old AOpen AX6LC motherboard Slot Pentium II, 233mhz PC that used to belong to a CNC Parts Manufacturing company. It had a 2mb 2d S3Trio64+ for PCI video. I have a Voodoo2 3d Accelerator 12mb that works with it as the 3d pass through. The motherboard has an AGP slot underutilized, and the system runs pretty well when I put a Geforce 6200 128mb card in there as you can imagine. Quake only ever will run super well with 3Dfx's Glide API and all the DLL's, but I'm thinking I need a new 2d card or something, or maybe a fresh Win98 install. I dont know what to do, Quake works fine then it doesn't. Sometimes when I rearrange the cards in different PCI slots that sometimes get the hardware working again with slightly more game play, but its still being cranky. What do you think folks?

Whilst I do not have any of my PC CRT monitors anymore I do have a PVM-20L5 and a BVM-D24E1WU for my RGB console setup and absolutely adore them both. Thus this video was thoroughly enjoyed by me. Quick question: what PC CRTs are on par with the PVM/BVM line? You did mention some Trinitrons are up there. Do you know the model numbers? I do recall reading about two models (numbers elude me) that are said to be amazing.

The colour there looks a lot better than the little Sony one I had as a kid, and better than dads old CRT as well. I know it's rather hard to judge accurately on the internet as opposed to in person so maybe it's just me but damn that's some pretty gaming!

Why GL Quake? I found the other worked a lot better for me personally. Perhaps try giving Quake (DirectX) a go (if able).

Woah. That degauss button zapped me back 20 years or so.

Now if someone here in Germany had a nice 17" Belinea in new old stock for me... :)

Clint, did they have any more for sale? I'd love to pick one of these up as well..

There were 19 of them available here when I bought mine. Looks like they sold out since my video went live: http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-OptiQuest-Q71-17-CRT-Monitor-1280x1024-87Hz-VGA-0-23-dot-pitch-ViewSonic-/172772375830

I've never used a PVM/BVM so I'm not sure which ones compare to them. But I do know the 17" Trinitron tube CRTs I have all look wonderful!

This covers the appeal of CRTs very nicely :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAi8AVj9GV8

Nice! I really liked the black ones back in the day since they were so futuristic-looking, but now I seem to be drawn to the beige and off-whites for nostalgia reasons :)

Now I miss the lovely 21" Sun CRT I had in college. Did 1600x1200 and worked with anything provided you had a 13w3 adapter. It came in the lovely gray/blue scheme Sun used back then.

Clint -- every one of your videos makes my day :) Love seeing your reaction to some glorious nostalgic tech. Keep it up, man!

Anyone know where I can find that screensaver for win 10? or afterdark for win10? I had them working on my previous computer (MacBookPro) but havn't had any luck tracking them down.

Anonymous

Can't help you with Afterdark, but for 3D Maze you can use this one (from Windows NT 4.0): https://www.dropbox.com/s/kfle451opypfz1k/WNTmaze.zip?dl=0 Works in Windows 7, should also work in Windows Vista, 8, 8.1 and 10 :)
