EDIT: This has been updated from the original posting due to a slew of bizarrely negative messages arising from the intro to the episode. All is well now though, thanks for the support!

Since the news broke yesterday morning about MS stopping development on Paint, I've worked non-stop on this! It ended up being sort of a mini Tech Tales episode, with more nostalgia and opinion bits. So yeah, "retrospective," that works.

I knew that my odd late night research a while back on this would come in handy. Been planning this video for like, five years now, ever since I covered the Mouse Systems PC Mouse on Oddware. And so, here we are. Time flies when you're having DOS!

Amusingly (to me at least) this has ended up being my second application video in a couple weeks, although Kai's Power Goo still hasn't gone public yet. So I guess this video will inadvertently test those waters first!

History of Microsoft Paint 1985 - 2017 [LGR Retrospective]

As of July 2017, Microsoft is halting development on the venerable MS Paint. Super excited to watch this! I love videos like this. Pretty unrelated, but it would be rad to hear your thoughts about RollerCoaster Tycoon Touch sometime.

I really do wonder what Microsoft are smoking sometimes. They just get worse every day it seems. Still, they can never touch history. I installed Office '97 the other day out of frustration over the crap they're pulling with 2016.

Kadah

Can't tell if it is already since YouTube app doesn't show this on mobile anymore, but going to make this one public sooner to ride the news wave? You're timing is perfect for that. As for a replacement for MS Paint, Paint.net has been mine for years.

LazyGameReviews

I can't imagine I'll be looking at that anytime soon. Completely turned off to the franchise since World.

Great video! I would love a video like this about Paint Shop Pro. Since I had a VGA adapter that capped at 640x480 at 16 colors, Paint Shop Pro dithering filters allowed me to see, or at least guess, images colors.

LazyGameReviews

I have fond memories of that program as well! Didn't know it had a dithering mode at one point, that's neat

BastetFurry

My first PC paint program was NeoPaint for DOS, of all things.

Ezydenias

So now we have a new paint that resembles a crappy 3d tool for everyone who doesn't hazzle to download Maya or buy blender 3D, or just use cardboard.

Ezydenias

The thing why I never used paint was because a long time it was really crappy at saving images. I mean it has it's charme but when gimp or photoshop take the same time to open, I dunno.

Anonymous

I always did like paint for its simplicity. Screenshots, basic edits, it really worked easily. I remember messing with Paintbrush on good ol' Windows 3.1 as well. Man, I miss those days sometimes.

Ezydenias

But when I was a kid I used it, well mostly the spray tool because it was awesome. Seriously it was awesome so pixelated spraycase mhmmmm edgyiest spray in the galaxy.

Back in the 80s, a friend of mine wrote a paint like program with all kinds of features that ran on an Apple 2e clone Called a Dick Smith Cat. It was a rebadged Lazer 1000 I think. I had teh same machine and it was an awesome paint program written in basic.

Paintbrush is probably the application I spent the most time with in Windows 3.1, even though my PC could only display 16 colors at higher resolutions. On the DOS side, I had Deluxe Paint II (Enhanced 2.0) which was the perfect pixel pushing program for me. A video about EA's legendary series of graphics editors would certainly be interesting to watch (hint, hint).

floverSaeu09

I love MS Paint!! I still use it over Photoshop for just some quick edits and freestyle drawing :D I still have the app on my 3 laptops (Windows 10, 8.1 and XP versions)

Video is unavailable...

Alyxx the Rat

Yeah I remember the JPG compression was ass compared to Photoshop so I completely switched to Photoshop.

Anonymous

Aw dang, didn't get to see it :( Could you at least upload it again, and make it only available for Patrons, until the new version arrives?

Anonymous

Yeah! I'd still be interested in seeing it anyway 0:

Damn! Got the email while at work. Waited till dinner and it's gone. :( Why do assholes have to ruin it for everyone else?

Nicholas Wilson

don't let the bastards grind you down, Clint. :)

avfusion

The amount of "Well ackshualee" on the internet is embarrassing.

LazyGameReviews

It is. Especially when they're "correcting" a fact that was already correct and in the video.

Anonymous

Nevermind, just saw the re-upload! Great video! These people really need to chill out! Or even Paint and Chill...anyways, what exactly was the problem that people freaked out on and needed to be re-edited?

Anonymous

Says you've removed the video on youtube.

Anonymous

Remember spending a lot of time with the 95 version.

evistre

I adore you retrospectives. Sorry people are jerks. <3

Saybur

Really glad you uploaded this again, don't let haters get you down. LGR videos are a standard 'go to' when we login to youtube! Thanks!

Anonymous

Excellent! Keep the videos coming!!

Anonymous

I came after you re-uploaded. I can't believe people are so dense to try to correct you on non-factual information you ALREADY STATED WAS FALSE. Oh well, I'll forever miss old MS Paint. Its memories will never be forgotten.

Anonymous

They're gonna stop paint? That is sad

Anonymous

I have a special relationship with Paint, having recreated it in a computer programming camp way back in the mid 90s. It's such a shame to see it go.

Anonymous

The 3D stuff makes sense as a feature. Paints so simple already can't see them destroying it with a few new bells and whistles.

Anonymous

Don't let the turkeys get you down. Good video, and I appreciate the effort.

Anonymous

I haven't looked through the comments, but I can't imagine why anyone would have any problem with this video at all, it's very informative. Pity you didn't mention PaintShop Pro. That's the paint program I still use to this day, even though the copy I'm using is nearly 20 years old. I just know how to use it so well I don't feel like learning something else.

LazyGameReviews

Thanks! It mostly had to do with my inclusion of those headlines at the start, people were really getting up in arms over them being incorrect (even though I said in the video how they were incorrect.) But yeah, Paint Shop Pro will likely be getting its own video of some kind in the future, so I decided to keep this episode focused on Paint and its direct relatives :)

Anonymous

Why would there be a problem with this video? I don't get it.

Anonymous

People are goobers and they'll complain about anything whether they're right to do so or not. Don't let 'em get to you, Clint.

Anonymous

So im not the only person that draws dongs? Thank goodness!

Anonymous

Looking forward to the video when it's re-released. This type of behavior from people is why labels have to tell you things such as fire being hot
