Greetings all, this will likely go public in a day or two but I wanted to post it here while it’s processing. Thankfully it’s overall a good report!

Some shelves of vintage items sure got soaked and nasty, the arcade machines got pretty gross, and I lost a bunch of modern stuff it looks like. But overall I am extremely fortunate in how much survived fully intact. I’d say 95% of the collection is just fine, which is a huge relief considering the sheer amount of damage to my house.

What happened to the LGR collection

Two trees cleaved through my house after Hurricane Helene blew through my mountain home of Asheville. While I’ve shown the damage to the structure is intense, many also asked what happened to the LGR retro collection, vintage computers, video games and such. So here’s an update! Of course the most important thing to me is that myself, my family, and my friends here are safe. But I am also deeply thankful it was not any worse in terms of items destroyed or damaged. Happy to hear from you, Clint. I have to say I was praying for you as a fellow collector. We can always replace stuff, sure, but at least the items that are harder to replace and are part of computing history are safe. My collection is books from a period where most would be considered ephemera but which are as important a record of human activity as great literature; I have one or two books in languages only a tiny fraction of a single country's people speak, as well as in archaic scripts, and recognise my responsibility as one of the guardians of their heritage. The most heartbreaking sight on the news for me over the last few years was the burning of Kharkiv university and the second most gut wrenching sight was your home -- because of the importance of preserving cultural AND technological records and artefacts. I also gave money to rebuild a library burnt down in recent UK riots for the same reason -- to destroy cultural collections and history is also to destroy who we are as people. It may be Mother Nature this time but ...same difference. Sending you best wishes from the UK. You are an amazing man and a hero for your work in this respect and I'm so glad that it is mostly safe.

Mark Fixes Stuff is still getting content mileage from his house fire a couple of years ago by restoring some of the damaged items. I doubt he counts it as a win, though.

I would be devastated after a hit like this. I don't know where I would go after this. Try to get everything back that got destroyed, save what is saveable and get new of the ones that are destroyed? Or stop collecting alltogether and downsize my phyiscal items? I don't know... LGR won't be the same after this catastrophe I guess. Stay strong and keep us updated if you can!

Man, I'm so sorry, Clint. At the end of the day, I get that it's a hobby where items can be replaced whereas lives can not be; however, it's YOUR stuff and your hobby. I'm sure you are just looking at things from a wide perspective as to what really matters but I know many of your fans here recognize that you lost a lot of your passion and collection here. It definitely hurts to see what of the collection got damaged, but I am very happy to hear that most of it is safe and of course, that stuff and not people are what perished in this for you. I'm sorry to hear man, but I hope you're able to reclaim and recover at least some of it. I see a lot of retro repair YouTube stepping up for this. I think many of them would be happy to help you. It's also good to see you practicing gratitude for things not being worse. That's an important part of the healing process that many people skip. Best of luck man, my patronage isn't going anywhere.

Heartbreaking! Your voice tells so much about how your feeling. Now, I've worked on a ton of hardware that have been very waterlogged before I got them. Since all of your stuff wasn't turned on when it got wet, I'm pretty confident all of it will still work just fine once you get it all dried out. The biggest casualties will be the boxes, documentation and likely floppy disks. If possible, would try to open up any boxed hardware and remove it so it can start to dry out. The longer it sits wet, the more likely corrosion will set in.

Unfortunately not, there are still countless roads that are either damaged or washed away. Lots of helicopter supply drops happening though!

Yeah, I feel you on the stages of grief with your damaged part of your collection. But like you said the majority survived and that's a bright side. I would definitely watch you document going through the damaged part and seeing how much is salvageable on blerbs. Making lemonade out of lemons sort of situation.

So glad to see the majority of your things are ok. After the flood I had earlier this year, I've been through a lot of my retro stuff that had water in it over the past few months. Most of them surprisingly work fine now. If there's anything I can do to help, let me know. The paper and magnetic media is frustrating... but, electronics if allowed to fully dry are often fine with a bath. Not exactly ideal obviously... but thankfully many of the devices will keep working.... I often wash filthy motherboards and even the internals of CRTs - then fully dry them of course.

Finding the good in the bad, Looking forward to how this changes things. In the mid 1980s we got a lot of rain and the basement had a foot of water. Floating in the water was my Atari 2600 with all the carts. Started bagging them up for garbage, Second thought, I started washing them. The labels did not make it. Put it out in the sun to dry. Odds did not feel good. I put it back together. and 99% of it worked. Just one cart failed. I put hand made labels on the games. Yes, it was small to what you are going though, I hope you get to 99% of what you can save.

I am so happy to see how much of it has survived, and to see that you're in good spirits about things! I'm still so sorry to see what HAS been ravaged by the elements.. I'd love to see a video of you just going through a ton of the damaged stuff, seeing what still works, what doesn't, what can be salvaged, etc etc. Though, that "still sealed in box" stuff that got wet? I'd unbox that IMMEDIATELY and let the parts dry! I know it may be a bit too far gone by now, but not new in box and salvaged, is still better than new in box but completely rotten! <3

Thankfully nobody was hurt, that's the most important thing. Everything else is "just stuff" but my god, that's so much stuff, even if only 5%. You are incredibly calm for what looks to us as a very traumatic episode. Also shows you how hard it is for all of us to retain these artifacts for future generations, when a storm like this blows through, things get ruined. Keep us posted on the restoration efforts.

I just want to share a great personal memory about Asheville, as a means of sending a prayer to one day return, to relive these good memories, and to dwell on hope for the future as Asheville rebuilds: My husband and I actually had our honeymoon in Asheville in 2022. Probably a strange place to go since we live in Tulsa, and most folks go to beaches or something for a honeymoon. However, we specifically wanted to go see one of our favorite bands, PUP, at the Orange Peel and the timing just coincided with our wedding year. So we made it a big Thing™ ! We also went to the Pinball Museum twice, walked through downtown over and over again, went to the Biltmore, and our favorite restaurant we visited was Nine Mile. We stayed at an Air BNB in the Montford District with no rental car - we walked or took the bus everywhere. We also visited the Moog Museum! What an absolute treat. I'm so thankful I got to spend time in Asheville and just know that the city WILL rebuild so we can return someday. Until then, I'm hoping everyone affected by the storm receives the care and help they need, and I'm glad you and your family are safe, Clint. Yes, you lost a lot of stuff, but it's possible many of the things in the boxes are just fine and only the packaging was destroyed. The most important thing is YOU are OK and you will come out of this stronger than before.
