Hey!

I've just finished setting up my Discord server, and I've added it to the reward tiers.

I believe the bot should send invites to all patrons who have connected their discord with patreon from their account settings. Let me know if there are any issues, and I'll try to see if I can solve it.

Here's how to get access if you haven't connected your account to discord yet:

https://support.patreon.com/hc/en-us/articles/212052266-Get-my-Discord-role

With this change I'll also be switching to the Pay up front payment system Patreon has been offering for some time now. This change will happen some time on the 2nd or 1st of December, after the main wave of the payments have gone through, to avoid any double billing in case someone joins in the last couple days of the month.

This change shouldn't affect any of the current/previous Patrons, who are currently pledged, and don't alter their pledges.

So what changes? For most of you, nothing really. However:

 • You won't be able to hop tiers for free anymore. When you upgrade to a higher tier, you will be charged the difference.
 • You won't be able to pledge, get the content, and unpledge before the billing cycle anymore.
 • If you join at the end of the month, you will be billed again at the start of the next month, if you don't cancel your pledge before that, once the system is in place. however, since I don't remove old content, it really doesn't matter what time of the month you join, you'll still end up getting the same content. The only thing you might miss on are Polls & Similar interaction earlier from the month. If those are important to you, it's best to join at the beginning of a month, to get the maximum amount out of your pledge! I'll admit this is the main reason I didn't initially want to switch to this system, as it's not entirely ideal.

Once the system is in place, I'll add a warning on the top banner about it, so someone doesn't accidentally make a payment they couldn't afford, while thinking they'd be riding for free, or something similar. Or to at least minimize the chance of that happening.

This does not change anything about me distributing the lower res versions of my content for free! I'll still continue to post free versions of my videos on my blog and other platforms I frequent.

The main reason I'm switching to this system is due to discord distribution. While I didn't consider it a big deal to have the occasional people jumping back and forth with their pledges, but with discord, having it open like that, feels like I'm opening it up to potential trolls/scammers.

It's also partly due to wanting it to handle similar to subscribestar, which works similar to most subscription sites, where you make a sub, and then it recurs a month later, instead of at a set time, like on patreon. Having patreon be open to jumping in and out for free, would make the substar option considerably worse as an option. So it's kind of an incentive thing as well.

But let me know what you think! Maybe I'll change my mind! I've had a poll about this before, but I figure there's no harm in having another one.

Thanks, that's weird. I'll have to look into that.

Eskoz

I'll be using both. Ideally everyone would make the switch, but it will likely take time. Also, there's no reason to abandon patreon as long as I'm not forced to. I'll also be adding discord integration to subscribestar.

Protect your content. Switch to Pay Up Front.

I assume there has to be a practical reason for patreon not requiring upfront payments from the start, but it was ridiculously unfair to creators. Glad you're finally able to get away from that!

Nick2802

thought you already did that

It's a double edged thing. With the default method then people can dine and dash. With the pay up front method then the artist suddenly have a legal requirement to provide the sold content (in the EU at least where it's a clear purchase due to VAT being applied.) Some artist prefer not having that requirement, but rather prefer taking it at their own pace.

Eskoz

You're paying VAT regardless of the payment method used. It shouldn't be a problem as long as you're upfront about what people are getting. You are not selling a video/game/picture, you're selling a service/subscription, access to old and upcoming content.

How do you access the Discord? Canceled my subscription on Patreon yesterday to pleadge on Subscribestar next month instead.

Eskoz

You get access as soon as you pledge, if your patreon account is connected. Subscribestar should work similar to other subwebsites, where you sub and then you get re-billed after a month, instead of in a couple days at the beginning of the month, so it shouldn't matter when you sub. If for some reason you get double billed within the next few days, I'm sure we can work something out.

Having a hard time understanding Discord, also if this is just a Patreon connection, where does that leave SubscribeStar and the use of MEGA? Discord doesn't look like It'd be a very reliable way to organize content, so I'm wondering about your plan there.

Marcus Sanguinius

I was invited automatically to the discord but then decided to leave, if I ever decide to rejoin will that be available to me. The main reason I left was this is my main Discord account and I dont want to really be associated with this, no offense.

Eskoz

I'm not sure. Do you still have an invite that you can accept? Otherwise it might require a -repledge, or maybe it's possible to unselect the tier, and reselect it and that would send you an invite.

Eskoz

Basically when editing your pledge, you can choose to select the custom option from the tiers, in which case you won't have a tier, then after setting that first, re-set it back to the tier you were in. Just make sure to have the custom payment amount be the same in both cases. It doesn't matter right now since payupfront isn't active yet, but once it is, I think it might rebill you the difference if you first edit it to a lower amount, and then edit it again to a higher amount.

Marcus Sanguinius

I switched to five dollars and was automatically connected to the discord once more, seems you just need to switch your pledge in order to get in again

Eskoz

Exactly! Great to hear it works. But in the future when doing that, make sure not to lower the pledge amount, after the pay up front feature has been set up, as it might re-bill you for the difference when going back & forth. It shouldn't do that according to this: https://support.patreon.com/hc/en-us/articles/360000126286-Update-my-membership-amount but you never know! However, if something happens due to a mistake, I'm sure we can work out a refund some way.

Keaton

For the $10 Tier, is all of your content available in higher resolution and framerate? Or are the older animations not? Will these will be made available on said Discord for download?

Eskoz

Yes. Everything that's been done since I started this Patreon is there.

Anonymous

so what's your discord server name?

Eskoz

It's not public, you get an invite automatically when you connect your patreon with discord.

Griffin Sweet

is your subscribestar already setup or is that in the near future? i just want to prep for the possibility of patreon being stupid

Daragoth

Are you still going to release your content for free? At least delayed I mean. Since I think that's been your method thus far.

Eskoz

Yes, at a lower res/framerate, same as before. So nothing will change with how I release free content. I don't really delay free content, I release it as fast as I can, but patreon releases do take priority. The game parts get delayed by a day or two to make sure there are no game breaking bugs at least, before I make a public release.

Anonymous

do all of these recent issues mean the playblast will be a bit late?

Eskoz

I believe it should be out within the next 24 hours or so. But yes, it is a few days late due to the issues.
