Another by request bolt action rifle review...it's been a minute. This is a heavy "Precision" model wearing a chassis. TD is here with his B17 jacket and we ask him about his bombing runs again. This Axis is chambered for the .270 since Wyatt twisted my arm to get it in this odd caliber. Don't get me wrong: .270 is a great hunting round but it's expensive and not available in large FMJ quantities. We'll cover that too. Then we get down to the specifics on this 12 lb Savage and talk about how the company needs to get back to its high accuracy roots!

I like bolt gun reviews. How many fighting rifles do I need? I try not to go to far down the “what if” hole so bolt guns are something I can buy have fun with and use way less ammunition. I’m not saying I would buy this gun. I have heard good things about the Ruger precision riffle and it comes in cartridges that make sense. I’m not against 270. I have a 1950’s model 70 in 270, but I have no idea why it’s even offered in a long range platform.

270 is an odd choice in a chassis gun unless you have the twist rate for match bullets, and are handloading them. Friend of mine has a custom barreled 270 in an MDT that's 0.2 MOA. Talking 2-inch group at 1200 yards, verified hits in a group setting with multiple witnesses. That's a very custom gun though. Off-the-shelf 270 and factory ammo is a weird animal. 270 is extremely capable but requires some set up. 6.5 CM is way easier entry into the 1000-yard game. Those off-the-shelf guns have the right twist rate, and the factory ammo is meant for range. Cheaper to shoot too. S&B 140gr HPBT in 6.5 CM available for $1 a shot when you buy 200 at a time--then cheaper every time you reload.
