Don't shoot the messenger...I'm here to help!  Yes your ROL lighting system is probably pretty awesome by now. But here, in this feature length prep video, is focused elsewhere. Here we consider loss of the entire electrical grid for at least 30 days. How will your system fare now?

This is not an all inclusive video of every situation and every possible lighting solution; that would be a 4 hr video! Instead I'll focus on options I have personally used and know that they work.  We'll start small and talk about the efficacy of each one. Then the corner stone of the video will be introduced for de-sucking your PLS.  Another fun systems video brought to by donors of TNP.

After watching this video I decided to update my systems. I had been waiting on buying portable solar for a long while due to low quality assurance and durability of chinese suppliers. With that said, I found a new company called Elecom Nestout, which has an interesting story as a Japanese made consumer products company that has just come to the US in the last few weeks (seriously, look on youtube, almost no English reviews). It advertises as high durability, and has mil-style aspects. I got their solar panel, 15000 battery, and their lamp for about $200 via amazon. Used it yesterday and the lamp works great as a flood light, the solar panel worked fine in direct light. Girlfriend liked it. Enough light to do dishes and live comfy presuming I can get a full charge by day. It's my hope this is highly durable, and for that I'm banking on Japanese-made. It does have a few small drawbacks, like the plastic component of how the light attaches could be brittle in extreme cold weather (but your batteries will suck too, so), and it's possible to cross thread the light attachment if you're being a doofus. Not suggesting this is like a combat solar rig, but a reasonable home backup system. So far it seems like a really high quality product, and while it's only $200ish right now, it will probably jump in price when they realize it could sell at $300-$350.

You can count me as one of the crazy ones with a solar farm. 30 panels on the roof and a 10kw backup battery. Keeps two rooms of lights, the fridge, and my internet powered up. I also have a goal zero yeti 400 and a yeti 50 to charge with a portable pannel when traveling is needed. One thing I have found useful are the ryobi lighting products. I keep a 6 bay ryobi charger plugged in where it will always get power and when teamed up with some ryobi puck lights and lanterns I will always have light on top of my couple of fenix and olight products. Also keeps the ryobi power tools as a viable option when the power is out. Ryobi also has a few small converters to AC and USB ports to charge other small electronics from their batteries. I’ve also considered how a portable panel and small solar generator could be used to barter. I can charge your phone/light/tablet, let’s trade.
