I did a bunch of batoning with my Woodsman over the weekend. Both wood scales were destroyed in the process. The damage started when I struck the spine near the handle (I didn't notice it right away). I also directly hit the handle with the baton to get it unstuck from a particularly tough log. Abuse? Absolutely. But that's what I want a knife like this to take. If the handles were a tough rubber, it wouldn't have been a problem. The blade and tang were undamaged, but I was wishing it had a thick saber grind so it would split better. On a positive note, Ontario is sending replacement parts free of charge (I offered to purchase them), so their customer service seems to be good to go. I'll be more careful with placing my baton strikes going forward with this knife, and keep my eyes open in case someone starts to sell non-wood handle scales. In the meantime, I think my Ontario SP10 will be back in my pack doing splitting duties on an upcoming BWCA trip this summer.
