Cat has a longer tail than other characters, so we couldn't use the present tail behavior for her. The solution we came up with includes having better authoring for the user, by allowing each joint in the tail to be rotated as wanted. When the interaction plays, the tail will react to movements but still try to keep its authored form. In addition to this, the tail is also sensitive to physical contact.

We're not sure if this is the way to go, but we're excited to show you this none the less.


0.5.1 will include this new tail behavior [for cat only] and is scheduled for release tomorrow.

oooh, that is cool. this same system could probably used for something like tentacles or other prehensile appendages. Can you still parent stuff to those tail joints?

Currently you can't. Might be added later. Beacuse the tail is so flexible, it might be a bad idea to parent to it.

what about the opposite. could you parent the tail to things? to for example simulate someone grabbing the tail?

This tail is using using an entirely different system, so it's not so simple to do that. This system does not offer constraints so not sure how such a thing could be solved. Might be possible to trap a tail due to physics. I'll have to look into this.

Well that answers my main two questions. However I'm still curious as to whether the existing chars will eventually be changed to this system even though they have shorter tails, and will it still be possible to translate the base of the tail. (I want that to not be an option, it really bugs me that you can move the base of the tail to a nonsensical position and it just stretches the mesh around the tail to 'fit'.)

Whether or not this system will be used for the other characters depends on how it's received. We'll see.
