The 2nd-generation Focus debuted at the 2004 Paris Motor Show, and its sporty version is the Focus ST that was added to the lineup in 2006.

The Ford Team RS responsible for developing the ST is a specialist group formed by a merger of the former SVE (Special Vehicle Engineering) who developed Ford's high-performance commercial cars, and Ford Racing who develops motorsports vehicles.

The ST series built by this special task force is a unique model that lives up to its name as the high-performance road car of Ford, with plenty of attention given to its tuning as well as its smallest exterior and interior details.

Its engine is a newly developed Duratec ST unit. A highly tuned variable timing mechanism was added to the engine based in their 2.5-liter 5-cylinder DOHC intercooled turbo, and it produces 221 HP maximum output and 235.7 ft-lb of torque.

The engine produces its maximum torque between 1,600 rpm and 4,000 rpm, and this gives it a surprisingly superior drivability.

The chassis is tuned thoroughly as well. The spring rates and damping force of the suspension has been optimized to match the improvement in power performance. The front suspension area is reinforced with a cross member, improving body rigidity. The brakes have been tuned as well, with larger brake disks and more.

Not just a sports model by name, one key fact about this Focus ST is that it is designed and developed at the same pace as their full WRC machines.
