In the following year of 2012, Toyota entered two 86s in the second and third round of the VLN, as Gazoo Racing. This then lead up to their Nürburgring 24-hour challenge. Completing this race would prove without doubt the durability of the car under high stress conditions.

The car participating was basically identical to the street car, with a roll cage, four-point seat belt and racing fuel tank installed to meet regulations, together with a slightly tuned suspension. That was the extent of the modifications on the car. Car #165 was driven by the 3 from the previous year plus Hisami Sato, who is also a journalist. Car #166 was driven by Toyota GT drivers including Hiroaki Ishiura, Kazuya Oshima, and Takuto Iguchi, while Minoru Takagi held the steering of both cars in a double entry.

The two 86s maximised on their fast cornering speed, and the #165 achieved 65th place overall and 6th in the SP3, while the #166 attained 46th overall and an SP3 class victory.
