Don't feel bad for mistaking Jin Mu for Jang Gang, since Jin Mu's hairdo and beard make him look like him in a way. I see it as a subtle character portrayal showing his desire to look like Jang Gang whose position (Gwanju of Cheonbugwan) he covets.

At the intro of the show in EP 1, the narration said the big lake is the source of the power of the mages in Daeho. So it wasn't the soul shifters' bodies underwater that enabled Mu Deok to unsheathe the sword, but the energy of the lake itself.
