In these first ten sonnets, as well as the following seven (up to seventeen)  Shakespeare has been commissioned to convince a playboy lord to settle down and have children. He takes the tactic of pausing his beauty and suggesting the only way for him to make his beauty everlasting is to have a child so as to pass his beauty on.
