Subaru's self hatred isn't a phase. Its a part of his character. If you remember episode 18 (Rem's confession), during Subaru's rant about his self loathing he mentioned that he's always had these thoughts and feelings the whole time. Even before be was isekaied. Mental illness is no joke. I'm not saying you guys are treating it as such. But this is exactly what makes ReZero's character writing so great. Their struggles and flaws stays a consistent part of them. In any other anime, after getting that pep talk those flaws immediately disappears, they grow past them and they never deal with them again. But that's not how it is with some people in real life. Those feelings are so deep rooted in how they perceive themselves.. it sticks with them their whole life. Subaru regressing and having those feelings again isn't bad, its quite realistic and actually serves a purpose in showing his character for what he is. Human. Those feelings aren't gonna go away any time soon. That's like trying to give ONE pep talk to someone suffering from depression and expecting them to just be fixed forever. That's an arrogant way of thinking. No, of course those negative feelings are still pop up every now and then. Its normal. He just lost Rem and now he's blaming himself. That's a human emotion. That will never change as a part of who Subaru is. But moving forward after going through those dips, its all about how you grow and learn to handle those feelings in a healthy way. You need to find a method suited for you that won't allow those negative emotions to drown you and swallow you up. Which requires a lot of time with therapy and self reflection. Sorry for the essay guys. Just wanted to bring it up.

So This may be repeatitive at this point but I will keep it concise for you. When one says "The Witch" they are speaking of The Witch of Envy who devoured half the world and all the other witches before being sealed. Subaru's ability "Return by Death" seems to be gifted to him by The Witch, The Witch of Envy, Setella. MaBeast hate "The Witch", they kill humans and they all seem to have a horn atop their head. They are drawn towards Subaru because he smells of The Witch. The White Whale is a MaBeast created by the Witch of GLUTTONY. Lye is an Arch Bishop in the Witch Cult representing GLUTTONY. Reg is an Arch Bishop in the Witch Cult representing GREED. Betelgeuse is an Arch Bishop in the Witch Cult representing SLOTH. Betegeuse once questioned if Subaru was the Arch Bishop of PRIDE because this seat is empty and I guess Subaru is a prideful bastard for much of the series. Ps The witches ( for example echidna) dont necessary have a connection with the arch bishops of the same title. I'm pretty sure all witch cult members worship the witch of envy somehow I hope this clears things up going forward.

You nailed it, and this facet of the wonderful writing is honestly what seems to alienate and put off so many viewers/reactors as the show goes on. They keep asking “Why hasn’t Subaru learned yet?” or say “I thought he was past this,” or they grow angry when he regresses to bad habits. And it’s like… I get it. I get that we as media enriched consumers are so accustomed to things being the complete opposite. We’re used to characters having positive growth arcs and very rarely do those characters regress and when they do it’s normally the point of the story (think Marvel’s Civil War as an example. But we almost never get a character who is genuinely trying to be better and improve and be healthier go through the arduous process over the span of several seasons/light novel books, without ever truly ‘arriving’ at the destination people expect or want him to arrive at. It’s a messy, drawn out, and often frustrating journey. It’s also thoroughly realistic and this beautiful. The only recent shows I’ve seen even approach Re:Zero in terms of its writing on mental health ate Bojack Horseman and The Bear, both of which also feature protagonists burdened by imperfections and absolutely struggle (and fail) as growing healthier and happier, time after time.

I loove Bojack! Lot more people should watch it. As a joke people have simplified it down as misery porn when it really isn't. The characters have their ups and downs, just like in real life. Bojack I think is one of the few shows that captures how quickly life can be so loud and hilarious and then so quietly depressing. Sometimes it can be both in one scene. Hey, that's life! Bojack as a character is so fantastically written as the asshole you're supposed to hate but then he has moments where he genuinely is trying to do right only to fck it all up somehow. Re:Zero and Bojack, altho severly different shows.. is a solid comparison.
