Love you guys lol, So this isn't spoilers. Otto is a merchant, he said he made a bad deal and got stuck with a bunch of OUT OF SEASON OIL. Basically he can't sell it, which is almost a death sentence for a traveling merchant (Spice and Wolf taught me this, ps you MUST put spice and wolf in a poll, it will do well and you will ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT CARLIE/ANGE (I rarely make recommendations but I've helped you guys a few times now so hopefully built some cred). Seriously Spice and Wolf! now back to topic... If a traveling merchant is unable to offload his wares, he's basically poor. So when Subaru and Rem offer to not only buy his junk (oil) but at market rate (more than generous), This is a life saver for Otto. Subaru then offers to literally buy all their wares if they assist with the rescue, which to them would be like winning the lottery. PPS: Don't hate Anastasia, hate hate the game.

merchant income is fully dependant of their sales. if they dont sell they have no money to buy, especially in earlier time when you cant just go to bank and take out a loan to help you get back on your feet. If you make a bad purchase (assumingly with all the money you have in order to maximize your profit) then you really are as good as dead cause you lost your only means of income. Normally it is not end of the world but in that time for them it is. That is equivalent of pro tennis player losing his arm, or track racer losing his leg etc... act of losing the limb is not end of the world (they can live without it) but it is death of their carrier which might as well be death of them. On side note, i totally agree regarding spice and wolf. it is not a show i see many people react to (although to be fair it is not like i go out of the way to look for random reactors that react to it, my statement only means that reactors i end up looking/following do not really react to SAW) but on my first watchthrough i really liked it and not to mention it was my gateway anime that got me into watching other stuff beside shonen.
