As you may know this anime was based off the game Cybperunk 2077, and there is a saying in NC, 'There are no happy ends in Night city". This applies to the anime as well so thats why the story didnt end happy.

If you've not watched the end credits, they apparently show Lucy just after the final fight and before the moon trip and where foreshadowing the end the whole time. Also you should check out the Edgerunners music video for Let you down by Dawid Podsiadło (the end credits song). It's it's own little story following the member that Lucy replaced in the gang. Really well done and a great song.

There's also a similar philosophy to that of ancient Greece (eg the Spartans, or tales of Achilles) that runs through the world of Cyberpunk, which is that you either die a hero in battle and are remembered forever, or live unremarkably, being forgotten when you die of old age. This philosophy is really evident in the Afterlife club, where for someone to have a drink named after them they need to "go out with a bang".

@Ange I'm sorry man, but David is dead dead. Like they named a drink after him in the Afterlife bar in the game dead.

Theres a pretty cool video on YouTube that shows a text you can receive from falco in the game and he mentions David and somewhat gives an update on what they've been up to since. Great reaction as always.

Nah man, anime first game second is the ideal cyberpunk experience imo. Edgerunners shows you what a story in Night City looks like, the game lets you make your own.

I agree with you. The reason why the story is slightly weak is because most of the the heavy lifting is done in the first 5-6 episodes, the rest just carries a very predictable arc. You obviously realized it and you knew where it was heading. It is a great arc for David and Lucy, not so much for Becca, but the strength in the show is not with the story nor the dialogues, it's in the presentation, animation and score. It takes a well worn story and weaves it into a new setting with ease.
