BTW I'm not sure if someone already told you this but Maomao's actress also voiced Tatsumaki from OPM and Lucy from Edgerunners. So talented, I can barely hear Tatsumaki except when she laughs.

Just finished ep 13 reaction and I wanted to comment this while it's still fresh in my mind lol: expanding on what Carlie said about Maomao feeling insecure about her looks, it's more of the opposite I'd say. Maomao knows she's fairly good looking hence why she puts on the fake freckles to prevent getting the unwanted attention from people in the pleasure district. Her putting herself down is more in regards to her less endowed physique compared to the other court ladies and concubines. That's one reason why she doesn't always acknowledge her own beauty, the other being she simply doesn't want to accept that someone like Jinshi for eg could be attracted to her as that would, to her, be a nuisance. You'd have noticed that every time she comes close to figuring about some information that she thinks would normally be too out of league for a 'lowly maid like herself' she immediately pulls away from it and pretends like she knows nothing. Her wanting to live out her term at the palace as quietly as possible before returning home, and her plans being foiled by Jinshi's growing curiosity/attraction to her plus her own curiosity and thirst for poison (literally!) putting her smack dab in the middle of the very scenarios she tries to stay away from, is what makes this anime so very hilarious and interesting! xDD

I'd add to that that Maomao grew up in an environment where a person's looks dictate their worth and prospects to a large degree, and this clashes with her own sense of worth. She knows that looks are transient and merely a superficial facade that is inherited, rather than earned. She loves her "big sisters" not because they are pretty, but because they are smart and driven DESPITE being beautiful, but the one she always looks up to is her doctor-dad - the smartest, most passionate person in her life. Her idea of a person's worth is their passion and drive, and that is why she looks down on Jinshi - she sees him as a worthless bum without a passion in his life, who just walks around being pretty, and that's something she can't stand.

Episode 13: Very nice cover, Ange. I definitely think if you upload longer video covers on YT, they would get a lot of hits. Anime piano is very popular, and so is anime electric guitar. I know it's much more work and time commitment to cover the extra minute, but I can tell you for sure there is a big audience anime electric guitar. There's also a popular anime pianist in Australia btw :). He occasionally plays public piano in one of the bigger malls in Sydney or Melbourne I believe? Fonzi M on YouTube. --- I never noticed this before, but during the scene with Jinshi and the Emperor, Jinshi's seriousness, and dedication and level of planning to get to where he wants is very reminiscent of Aqua from Oshi no Ko... and of course they share the same VA. Very interesting point about the sandalwood. I have ZERO frame of reference to that, so that sentence glossed over me, but Cariie brought up how it's an apparently more masculine smell? This is why i like watching you two. Always new things to consider, new perspectives, expanding my knowledge and brain. Wow, nice perspective at the end regarding Jinshi, that Maomao thinks he just does that with all the other girls. I don't think it's accurate to what Maomao thinks, but that's a sensible real-world theory that's applicable in real life. I've personal negative experiences with this... so when Carlie brought it up, it hit different. Jogged some bad memories.

Episode 14: The Dust Explosion was actually something you've seen prior, in Re:Zero, not too long back. I was wondering about it at the time when watching your R0 reaction, but maybe it's confirmed now? Did that bit about the dust explosion in Re:Zero fly over your guys' heads at the time? This is real science, and a famous and deadly dust explosion happened back in 2015 in Taiwan, during a music festival at a water park. Caught on camera. You can see the video evidence yourself of how a regular festival suddenly turned into a deadly inferno in the blink of an eye. Just from corn flour getting heated up. It was due to ignorance and negligence and people not knowing that fine powder ignites easily. I think that incident was one of the first times I was exposed to the concept of dust explosions. So while the explosion could be intentionally triggered by the pipe smoker who had criminal intent, it's also very plausible the pipe smoker was innocent and didn't know about what happens when you combine dust and an open flame. !!Re:Zero S2 E23 SPOILERS!! The dust explosion was during the part when Subaru first arrived at the mansion to rescue Petra et al. Subaru lured the mabeast to a room and tried to ignite a bunch of powder in the air with candles he knocked over. He wanted an explosion to occur from all the dust igniting at once, but nothing happened.

Side note, in the scene that Lakan is talking about the green haired courtesan, the clip in your full reaction seems to have been cut out where they did the flashback to the green haired courtesan, and right after you were saying "do you think it's meimei? she was smart and a board player right?" And not only did it cause my video side-by-side to de-sync for a bit, and confused me but i was worried that you were mislead with the meimei bit by accident (not saying any of it is true or false, i dont actually know myself), but i was worried the source's missing segment confused you... but i guess it didnt? I thought that the streaming platform that you were watching on had the flashback cut out compared to crunchy roll and that it would have some sort of implications in either form : you guys never seeing the green hair flashback, or the implication of "green hair = maomao's mum DuH, i'm a simple man, i see hair color, i see connections" and all that... So i was worried about how i'd approach the missing clip because saying or not saying something implies it's important or not important... edit: That being said, i waited till the end and listened to your conversation and I saw you guys say that you went back to that scene and saw it, and I also heard you specifically talk about the green haired flashback, so you DEFINITELY saw the cutaway. So i think you got all the info you needed from that scene, whether it's true or misdirections or red herrings like the show often does, I was just worried you were denied some scenes that your fans have seen differently when watching side by sad. But i think you're in the clear for now! -- also ange/carlie, that cutaway of jinshi faceplant his head to the wall after seeing "kawaii" maomao was so abrupt and random and hilarious that i genuinely almost choked on my bobba tea's tapiocca while watching you guys lol

Can I just say how much I appreciate you guys liking this show? Shallower reactors pass on this show because they want the action and the violence and the drama, but I like how invested you guys are in genres like this.

yep, there was a chunk where the audio and visual desynced! but it looks like that was the only part. We have fixed the problem now as well. Lucky we touched on it after the episode. We're making a habit of scrubbing through the episodes when we finish so we touch on everything, mainly because we're not sure what our editors are going to cut out for the edited reactions.

we're really loving this show. All of the mystery and us having to take on queues and clues to theory craft is really fun. We try to have a good variety on the channel when we can. Avatar and Apothecary are nice series to break up the Shonen series (we do LOVE shonen but we understand not everyone does).

Ace of diamond) 😏 Fri- isekai (ex. That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime) 😏 Sat- non.anime (kdrama or western shows) Sun- rest day ☺️ or whatever you guys wanna do Just so everyone gets something. Then when you’re done you can change it and explore other shows and not necessarily stick to the same genre.
