Mango

I have been summoned

ONEEIGHTEEN

dang finally. been waiting for this.

Anna

Finally, I was eagerly waiting for this🥳🛐

Mango

BTW the princess Gyokuyou (red pink-ish dress) has same VA as Frieren AND the blue one Lihua has Mikasa VA.

Daniel J

Nice, hope you guys enjoy the show! I'm sure others might have said the same thing before but I'd keep an eye out for spoilers in the comments. I hate seeing when a mystery/plot can 'technically' be solved if you manage to catch every single hint and pick up on what's going on, but some commenters end up being too impatient and decide to just explain every single detail and spoil the reveals coming up.

AkdrzlLOL

Apothecary diaries is amazing, this and Frieren are some of my favourite new gens.

long ass username

From Anya from Spyxfamily, to Frieren, to Gyoukuyou… Atsumi Tanezaki is an incredible voice actress

Mel

Pronunciation for Maomao is option 1, answering Ange from episode 2’s intro. Rear palace is basically where the concubines of the emperor would live back in ancient China, and it’s basically forbidding men to enter without permission so normally only eunuchs are allowed. Also, Gaoshun’s VA is the same as Tengen(the flashy hashira) from Demon Slayer.

Meg

Yesss so excited for this!! 😍

Damian

I loved this anime, I had to start reading the light novel for it as soon as I finished it. I can't wait to see your reaction. Love from Texas!!!

Gabriel Barott

I want to echo what someone mentioned above, that there were many spoilers out there for this show as it was airing. Definitely be mindful, as some things that people may say might not appear to be spoiling anything on the surface.

Sammy

Great opening cover as usual! Really looking forward to you listening to the opening in its entirety later on, it's such a banger

Starzlix

yessss im so exicted, i watched this weekly with my bf, we would have frieren fridays and maomao saturdays kk

Mango

Just small info of concubines. That I know of. No spoilers. Every woman inside rear palace are, or can become concubines. There are low, mid, and high rank concubines. Maomao is a servant level which is lower than a low-rank concubine. But servants can become concubines too. The way they get women inside the rear palace is either them being sold to the emperor by their families (who are poor), or like MaoMao by kidnappers. Also emperor can just go to any village and pick any women he wants if she catches his interest. The lady-in-waiting are women picked by high rank concubines and who have better chance at becoming concubines(?) They are kind of like personal maids for the high ranking concubines too as you see. correct me if I'm wrong on anything.

S2ummers7

Will you guys be reacting to invincible season 2? It just recently finished, enjoyed your reactions to the first season

poisonivybag

Yeesss you will love this show!

MrYinYang

A bit of a spoiler warning about the age of Maomao and Jinshi. They will mention it later in the series, but it will help quell the predatory vibe of their relationship earlier in the show. . . . . . . . . . . Maomao is around 17 yo Jinshi is around **** (younger than you think)

Mango

I was thinking of telling this too since Carlie seemed really uncomfortable about Jinshin and MaoMao XD. MaoMaos age isn't spoiler-ish but Jinshin is.

MrYinYang

Yeah definitely a character design choice. Maomao is just a petite female. Has child-like mannerisms and looks but mentally mature with how she carries herself around others.

paladar blade

Looking forward to this and honestly I'm impressed you resisted the urge to binge the series in one sitting from the way one ep just leads to another, I couldn't.

Martina

that's a huge spoiler so I'm not sure I would be mentioning this at all

Martina

heads up for this one! there will be many moments where you won't get what tf happened and you will think that you're just slow, but you're not! because the show is just like that, they set up something and they revisit it later, and 99% of things get explained eventually. so don't sweat it :D

Martina

also that cover, amazing as always 🤘

Meg

Awesome reactions guys! Banger cover as well as always. I lost it at Carlie reacting to Jinshi just like how Maomao did xDD Don't worry Carlie, he'll grow on you pretty soon haha. Fun fact, Maomao's name is written with the Chinese characters for cat (literally, 'cat cat') so her cat-like features is on point lol. She's the personification of 'curiosity killed the cat but satisfaction brought it back'. This show is very much character driven with some murder mystery elements. The episodes are set up so that they flow from one to another seamlessly as you guys noted with the ending scenes. There's also a lot of scenes where Maomoa thinks or talks to herself when 'investigating' and her monologuing is very relevant to many episodes. I say this since you guys are not watching this series in one stretch so chances of missing some things mentioned in previous episodes may be high. Btw Gaoshun's VA is the same as Usui Tengen from Demon Slayer, Carlie's favourite! (mine too xD)

Meg

Jinshi's age is a huge spoiler and revealing it now will impact their experience with watching the rest of the show. I suggest you delete this. Let them get to that revelation at their own pace.

MrYinYang

yeah, I did. A bit of context may help the viewing experience for them and us. But in the next few hours if enough of the community is vocally against revealing Maomao's age (to answer Ange's question). I can delete the comment thread.

KaijinGarou

That OP is fire and great cover too as always! I love the 2nd OP too, though. I didn't care too much for it at first but it grew on me.

beannieswife

so excited for ya'll watching this!!♡ episode 3 has to be one of my favorites, "would I be a bad woman if I said I envied her?" the way i started bawling my eyes after she said that. from maomao's comparison of fuyou with a flower, to her line at the end "if love makes a woman beautiful, what kind of drug would it make?" this show portrays women and femininity in a way that it just gets you on your feels, and i'm glad you paid attention to the shot of maomao's hand too! it means something but it's fully open to interpretation, such a well written episode

KaijinGarou

An apothecary is just what we call a pharmacist today. Although Maomao could easily be a doctor 😅

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

You do not need to feel sorry for MaoMao's boss. She is there because she and her family want her there.

KaijinGarou

I think it's Mao-mao. Moh-moh makes me think of ATLA's Momo especially since you're watching that too and it's weird 🤣

KaijinGarou

"Don't worry, they didn't go all the way" is hilarious 🤣

Алта

Maomao is 17 I think

JN

WHAT She's also Vivy from Vivy, and Tome from Mob Psycho.

Mango

Does patreon have mods like in youtube and twitch? Who can delete comments, or at least check them before the creators do? I do want them to read the comment for explanation purpose, but then again some comments might unintentionally spoil stuff. ( ´_ゝ`)

Trisha Sablan

I've been patient waaahh. So excited for this since 2 weeks ago ✨ thank you guys! You deserve all the love in the world.

Jeff

guys can you try to react to sungjin woo dub just the highlights like him saying arise etc theres a ton of comparison in YT.

Milosz Skowronski

Apothecaries were a bit more than just pharmacists. Today, pharmacology is a specialised field of study, specifically concerned with drugs and their interaction with human body, but back then apothecaries were a little bit more like general practitioners - diagnosing and dealing with common illnesses, and referring patients to surgeons and other doctors when necessary.

V D

I'm very happy with the reactions so far. All I can say is: keep watching. That said, I'll fill in some of the cultural blind spots for you guys if you happen to see this without spoiling much. - The rear palace is indeed meant simply to serve as the emperor's harem. Once something in life gets big enough it takes on a life of its own, and the rear palace is no different, it has its own political struggles that you have seen and will continue to see. - This detail doesn't have any significance later on so I decided to share it: Lady Gyokuyou actually doesn't dislike the emperor; she's just not happy about the fact that she has to share him with other concubines even though she recognizes this reality and accepts it. - Maomao's name is officially Maomao, written with two 'cat' characters in chinese (猫猫). In Chinese, 'Xiao' means little and is usually used as a prefix to a girl's name to create an affectionate/casual nickname (e.g. Xiaomao is Gaoshun's nickname for Maomao, Gyokuyou's daughter was called Xiaoling at some point (her name is Lingli), and Maomao's gossip friend Lan is often called Xiaolan). You might be familiar with the -chan suffix in Japanese names; this is similar. - The idea of Maomao calling in favors or making requests of Jinshi and Gyokuyou is a very westernly mindset. Maomao is a servant. Any of the people around her could have her beheaded for any number of reasons, nevermind how important people like Gyokuyou is. There is another difficulty: these characters are all in the rear palace which is part of the inner court. The inner court is considered to be the emperor's... personal matters. There is a philosophy to separate family and work in Chinese culture, so the inner court and the outer court rarely ever interact with each other, and as you can probably tell, the rear palace and the inner court by association is considered to be "women issues" whereas the "real men" deal with the "real problems" in the outer court. Stuff like... running the country, making laws, managing the budget, etc. Jinshi and Gyokuyou may be powerful, but their powers do not have much sway in the outer court. The most they can do is probably personal intimidation and/or bribery.

FGK

"Why does she keep looking at her hand?" That hand, specifically the pinky finger, will reveal a lot later on.

Paden Snell

Many of the concubines are there for political reasons. Other high ranked families give their daughter to the emperor for his favor. And their status as a concubine is partially derived from how influential a family they came from. So gyoukou for example was given to the emperor from a very important/influential family. Maomao looking at her hand: something I think the art in the anime doesn't portray clearly enough is that the tip of her pinky is slightly disfigured. So she's looking at the scar on her finger. In the Manga it is a little more obvious that her finger is a little messed up.

FGK

Carlie seems to be hating Jinshi right now but she'll likely hate a certain "someone" 10x more later on 😆

Hoa Trương

Just to classified and make things less weird. Mao Mao is not 14. She 17 when she get kidnapped. And it've been around half a year by now at episode 3. So she 17 and a half. Gyokuyou is actually not that old LOL she only 19. She more like Mao Mao sister/friend than an aunt. And Jinshi uh... Let just say he young too so don't worry about it.

FGK

Isn't this like...a borderline spoiler? 😂

FGK

Carlie's reaction to ep.3. I assume they can't handle horror? They should watch Another then 😁👍

Jason

I like that Ange spotted this is set in Imperial China straight away, it's easy for us Asians but I never expected ppl to be able to tell Asian countries apart in first glance, especially in ancient period. Some facts about Imperial China I wanna add: There are thousands of concubines in the rear palace, they all were properties of the emperor, nobles in different regions offers their daughters to the rear palace, if she gets lucky and have the emperor's attention, a lot of benefits can come to the regions she is from. The rear palace is managed by eunuchs, reason being if one concubine got pregnant from another man and is mistaken as the emperor's, the consequence is far too huge that it could swift a dynasty that has lasted hundreds of years.

Jason

It's just a modern mindset rather than a western mindset, I'm sure the hierarchy system you described existed in many places in the world.

Martina

"Gyokuyou actually doesn't dislike the emperor; she's just not happy about the fact that she has to share him with other concubines" well I think it's a bit more complicated than that. she doesn't dislike him, that's true, but a great theme of this show is class/status vs true desires. I'm sure Gyokuyou is very happy that due to her favored status with the Emperor, her region is prospering, as we could hear from palace conversations. being a high ranking concubine also has many advantages, giving one a very comfortable life. however, she must completely abandon her own wishes and freedom. it is no wonder, then, that she feels jealous of concubine Fuyou.

V D

I mostly agree because nobody back then could truly live a life they wanted, but it's not specifically implied that Gyokuyou necessarily has personal desires outside the palace. The idea of pursuing a true love was still more fiction than reality for the populace of the time, and I don't think Gyokuyou has any sweethearts from before her palace debut. Since being empress is something she desires for herself, a more ideal "happy ending" probably exists within the confines of the imperial palace. Still, again, due to status and tradition, she can't have that good ending either.

Jeff

she gains domain expansion mao mao's kitchen

The show ran in parallel with Frieren for the fall and winter seasons. So for half a year you got Frieren, Fern (and Übel) on Thursday: and Maomao on Saturday. What a treat. And the latter girl is actually my favourite, she carries the plot more than Frieren does and has her own deep story. So don’t treat anything as one off, it may be relevant later. Those “car ear” scenes are called chibi style animation. Great work on the cover too, you could make a record of those, I’d buy. (Or a post with your best covers).

Tony Zhao

As a Chinese, I can give you guys some helpful information. So "mao" in "Maomao" actually means cat in Chinese, and name like "Lady Lihua" and other ladies all mean different types of flowers or plants in Chinese. There are a lot of good references of naming in this anime for the upcoming characters as well! Glad you guys picked up on the ancient Chinese vibe that quick!

Tony Zhao

Definitely Option 1, Maomao. And also Lady Lihua and Lady Gyokuyou have the same ranking or status if you will, all the narator is saying is that Lafy Gyokuyou is more likeable and likes to play a bit more lowkey so she does not hire a lot of servants in her hourse, unlike Lady Lihua who hire a lot. Please keep in mind that servants under Lady Gyokuyou are all very very nice people. For instance, when Hongniang, so the head of the servants, intentionally dropped the vase. She was trying to deduct Maomao the formal salary, so that a lower amount will be sent to the kidnappers, but she then immediately gave a “bonus” paycheck privately so that she received actually same if not higher paycheck.

JN

Maomao looking at her hand in Ep 3 may be her looking at her pinky. In Asian cultures, especially Japanese and supposedly Chinese, a pinky symbolizes romantic love. It's a bit of an older cultural symbolism though. You may notice in some Japanese media, they'll tease or imply romance by showing an outstretched but slightly curled pinky finger. "Heh heh, are you two... (show curled pinky) LOVERS???"

Mitha Septiandari

Thank you for picking up this series 😄

The Great Santini

*EDIT* Never mind. Apparently what I said is somewhat of a spoiler. Let me put it this way... I don't think you have to worry about the"nail-file" vibes that you got from Hisoka.
