Loved this episode. I always assumed that the painted lady was like….unable to manifest when the river was polluted? Like it weakened her spiritual powers or something and that’s why she only rolled up at the end. It really was such a moral issue with this one and I love that the show poses those kinda of questions.

See, the first time I saw this episode, it never even occurred to me that Sokka might be right. I thought it was obvious that he was totally in his own head about the schedule, caught up in anxiety over his precious invasion plan and his fears about it, rather than behaving ar all logically. (This was probably because I'm a bit of a geek about fantasy maps, and looking at the Avatar world map, I could see no way they would really need that much time to get anywhere in the Fire Nation, given the distances we've already seen them fly in a single day when they've needed to.) So it was only when I started following others' reactions that it occurred to me that you could read it another way-- and that iin fact, most people do! // I now think the writing is a little weak in this episode. The audience isn't given enough information to have any idea how rational Sokka is being, which kind of muddies up the narrative, and not in a beneficial way IMO.

Totally! I love how the show is this far in yet it still explores how these characters are all still growing.

That's very interesting, as was this episode to be fair. We felt Sokka was being rational but I guess we are older than most watching this for the first time. Awesome point!

I'm once again horrifically late with this, and you'll probably never even see this, but I wanted to add my 2 cents on the moral dilemma in this episode. In essence, it's the question of helping the world through big-picture causes or helping the world through lots of solving of smaller-scale problems. What I think is important, is there is in my opinion NO "right" answer to this, other than perhaps "do both". Me, though, I really like the idea of helping individual people wherever you can. I really really like the idea that the "little people" are who matter; and that there is little use in saving the world if it means those "little people" suffer. But also, I just wanted to point out that, as far as I know, nobody other than the Avatar was directly contacted by a Spirit before. Except maybe Iroh. The Avatar because they're the Bridge, obviously; and Iroh because he's the GOAT, and also he's basically Mister Spiritual. So if Katara did something on the level of those two, and being directly contacted by a Spirit I would argue qualifies her as doing exactly that, then I think she must have been doing SOMETHING right. But that's just me though.
