Hello, fellow Pipers! After finishing all the musical scenes last week, this week we started sketching regular dialogue scenes. 'Dialogue scenes' are both simple and challenging. In fact, dialogue scenes have some established rules and conventions. For instance, when two characters are talking, it's common to use three shots: one showing both characters, and two focusing on each character's face. However, if every scene is this static, it might lose personality and become boring. Especially in animation, which often involves more still movements compared to live action movies.

So, how can we add excitement to dialogue scenes?

There are countless directing styles, but two easy approaches are:

1. Expression of Power
2. Expression of Intimacy

First, the 'Expression of Power' involves changing the character's height based on where the 'power' in the conversation is leaning.

As in Spider-Man, if one character is below the other, shot from a high angle, they might seem vulnerable. On the contrary, if shot from a low angle, they'll appear stronger. By repeating these simple rules while expressing the characters' power dynamics, you can convey information without making it monotonous.

 Second, the 'Expression of Intimacy' involves adjusting the camera's distance (making characters larger on the screen) based on the level of 'intimacy' hidden in the dialogue.

As in Whiplash, when characters feel a sense of intimacy, bringing the camera closer makes them feel more connected. There's no one-size-fits-all rule for size, so watching various videos and realizing how 'this size of a character feels this close' helps a lot.

This week, I've organized the two longest scenes. I'll put in my best effort to complete the rest of the shots by next week! Also, I've planned the budget using the funds we've gathered from commissions, donations, and freelance work throughout the past year. Surprisingly, it turned out to be larger than the grant we received for the project. I was initially concerned about completing the work within the limited time without additional animators, but fortunately, it seems possible. I'm grateful for your support; without it, we wouldn't have come this far. I'll be back next week after completing all the sketches!

안녕하세요 동료 파이퍼즈 여러분!

지난주에 뮤지컬 장면을 모두 마무리지은 후, 이번주부터 일반적인 대화 장면의 스케치를 진행하게 되었어요. '대화 씬'은 참 쉽고도 어려운 씬이에요. 사실 대화씬은 어느정도 정해진 규칙과 관습이 있어요. 두 캐릭터가 대화한다고 가정했을때, 두 캐릭터를 보여주는 샷 하나, 각 캐릭터의 얼굴을 비춰주는 샷 두 개, 총 3개의 카메라를 반복해서 쓰는것이 일반적이에요. 하지만 모든 장면이 이렇게 고정적이면 개성이 죽고 지루해지는 샷이 될수도 있어요. 또 영화와는 다르게 애니메이션은 정지된 움직임이 더 많다보니 더 그렇구요.

그렇다면 대화씬에는 어떻게 재미를 추가 할 수 있을까요?

🤔무수히 다양한 연출 방식이 있지만, 가장 쉽게 접근할 수 있는 것이 두가지 있어요.

1. 힘의 표현

2. 친밀감 표현

먼저 '힘의 표현'은 캐릭터 사이의 대화 속에 숨어있는 '힘'이 어디로 기울어지느냐에 따라 캐릭터의 높낮이를 바꾸는 방법이에요.

예시 영상인 스파이더맨의 장면처럼, 한캐릭터가 다른 캐릭터의 아래에 있어 하이앵글(위에서 아래로 내려보는 각도)로 찍힐때 연약해보이고, 그 반대로 로우앵글로 찍히면 강해보이죠. 이처럼 캐릭터사이의 힘을 표현하면서 간단한 규칙을 반복 적용하면서 또 지루하지 않게 정보를 받아들이게 할 수 있어요.

두번째로 '친밀감의 표현'은 캐릭터 사이 대화 속에 숨어있는 '친밀감'이 얼마나 큰지에 따라 카메라와 캐릭터의 거리가 가까워지도록 (화면 안의 캐릭터의 크기가 커지도록)하는 방법이에요.

예시 영상인 위플래시의 한 장면처럼, 한 캐릭터가 다른 캐릭터와 친밀감을 느낄때, 서로와 더 가깝게 느낄 수 있도록 카메라도 더 가깝게 사용한 것을 알 수 있어요. 이 크기에 대한 것에는 정답이 없기 때문에, 다양한 영상들을 자주 보면서 '이정도 크기의 캐릭터는 이만큼 가깝게 느껴지는구나'를 체화하는 것이 큰 도움이 된답니다.

이번주에는 가장 긴 씬 두개를 정리했습니다. 다음주까지 나머지 샷들도 온전히 마무라 할 수 있도록 힘낼게요!

또 지난 년도에 모아두었던 예산을 가지고 예산안을 짜보았어요.

정말 놀라웠던 것은 지금까지 여러분들과 함께 진행했던 커미션, 후원금, 외주비를 전부 모아보니,  일전에 떨어졌었던 지원사업의 지원금보다 더 큰 예산이 모였다는 사실이에요. 가장 걱정했던 것은 한정된 기간안에 함께할 애니메이터 분 없이 작업완성이 가능할까에 대한 고민 이었는데, 다행히 불가능한 일은 아닌 것 같아 기쁩니다. 방법을 찾아서 돌아돌아 여기까지 왔으나 맞는 길로 가고 있는것 같습니다. 여러분의 도움이 없으면 나아갈 수 없었다는 사실을 알기에 두번세번 크게 감사드립니다!
