Hello, fellow Pipers!

Have you ever found yourself stuck drawing the same poses, the same facial expressions, and the same compositions when you're drawing comics or illustrations?

 I often get caught up in this dilemma. I think it's because drawing is essentially about representing three dimensions on a flat surface, making it challenging to extract images from our imagination. So, what can we do about it? What if, in reverse, we filled our minds with more three-dimensional scenes? 

That's what I want to talk about in this week's diary, "Creating a Mental Library."

Like the video shared above, this week, I had to create a scene where two people are having a conversation by a railing with vast water in front of them. However, scenes like this, as interesting as they are, can be challenging to make as visually engaging as the action scenes. Why? Because in the end, similar compositions tend to repeat. Nonetheless, despite the similarities, there was something intriguing about such scenes. 

So, I decided to build a library by studying this video: Video Link. 

This scene is from Titanic! Jack's wit as he persuades Rose not to give up herself to prevent her from jumping is quite memorable. Not only is the change in their relationship portrayed positively, but the tension is also well maintained, making it far from boring. How can we write such dialogue scenes? I tried drawing it to find out.

While doing this, I noticed elements that, had I not done it, I might have missed:

1. In scenes where characters are standing together, drawing characters smaller helps establish distance and the background.
2. Change the camera angle as characters get closer.
3. Many scenes have the horizon line rising above the characters' heads.
4. Use objects like columns near railings to separate characters and express conflict.
5. Three-dimensionality in faces is more engaging than flat views.
6. Use actions like throwing a cigarette to cleverly lead the situation.

I discovered many aspects that I hadn't considered while composing scenes only in my imagination but could now see through the actual camera. I documented these by drawing and taking notes to store in my mental library.

Ultimately, before creating the library, the sketches showed compositions focused on frontal views, large characters, and other elements. 

However, after creating the library, the use of backgrounds and character placement became more dynamic, and I gained a better understanding of compositions that convey emotions and terrain.

While drawing scenes is the primary transformation of a written script into visuals, studying various works to identify mistakes is also a crucial part of creating great art.

Currently, 60% of the thumbnail work for the entire animation is complete. It seems that the work is becoming more enjoyable. My goal is to finish 100% of the thumbnails by this weekend and choose some of the created compositions to complete the background and style design next week.

여러분은 만화를 그리거나 그림을 그릴때, 어쩐지 다 똑같은 포즈, 똑같은 얼굴방향, 똑같은 구도를 그리게 되어 난감한적이 있으신가요? 저는 항상 그런 고민속에 빠지고는 합니다. 아무래도 그림은 평면 위에 입체를 그려내는 작업이다 보니, 상상속에서 이미지를 꺼내오기엔 한계가 있는것 같아요. 그러면 어떻게 해야할까요?

역으로, 머릿속에 입체적인 장면을 더 많이 담아둔다면 도움이 되지 않을까요?

이번주의 다이어리는 '머리속 라이브러리 만들기'에 대한 이야기를 해보려고 합니다.

위에 공유된 자료 영상처럼, 이번주에는 광활한 물을 앞에 둔 난간에서 두사람이 대화하는 장면을 만들어야 했어요. 하지만 대화는 장면 만큼 흥미로운 그림을 만들기 어려운 장면도 없어요. 왜냐하면 결국에 비슷한 구도가 반복되니까요. 

그럼에도 불구하고 비슷한 상황에 흥미롭다고 느낀 장면이 있어, 이 영상을 보면서 라이브러리를 만들기로 했답니다.

위 장면은 타이타닉에서의 대화장면이에요! 로즈가 스스로를 포기하는걸 막기위해 설득하는 잭의 재치가 인상이 깊죠. 둘 사이의 관계가 긍정적으로 바뀌는 과정이 잘 표현되었을 뿐만 아니라 긴장감까지 놓치지 않아서 지루한 느낌이 들지 않아요. 어떻게 해야 이런 대화 장면을 쓸 수 있을까요? 그 비밀을 알고싶어서 한번 따라그려 보았습니다.

그러면서 저라면 하지 않았을, 그러나 있기 때문에 좋았던 요소들을 찾아보았어요.

1. 캐릭터 둘이 서있는 장면 속에는 인물을 작게 그려야 거리감과 배경이 설명된다.

2. 캐릭터가 가까워 지는 만큼 카메라의 위치를 바꾼다. 

3. 수평선이 머리 위쪽까지 올라간 장면이 많다.

4. 난간 옆 기둥 등을 이용해서 캐릭터 둘을 분리하면서 갈등을 표현한다.

5. 얼굴은 평면적으로 바라보는것 보다 입체감이 있는게 더 재미있다.

6. 담배를 던지는 등의 동작을 이용해 재치있게 상황을 유도한다.

그동안 상상만으로 구성하면서 놓쳤던 부분을 실제 카메라를 통해 많이 발견했습니다. 그리고 그것을 그려보고 메모함으로서 머릿속 라이브러리에 저장해 두었구요.

결과적으로 라이브러리를 만들기 전 스케치에서는 정면 위주의 평면적인 장면, 너무 크게 등장한 두 캐릭터의 구도 등이 보여졌는데요.

라이브러리를 만들고 난 후에는 배경과 캐릭터의 사용이 더 적극적으로 바뀌었고, 지형지물과 인물의 감정이 보이는 구도에 대해 더 이해해서 그릴 수 있게 되었습니다.

작업을 하면서 언제나 글로 작성된 장면을 1차적으로 그림으로 바꾸는 것도 중요하지만, 좋은 작품을 위해서는 다양한 작품을 참고해서 실수하는 부분을 짚어내는것도 중요한 과정 같아요.

현재 전체 애니메이션의 60% 썸네일 작업이 마무리 되었습니다. 점점 작업이 재미있어지는 것 같아요. 목표는 이번주 주말까지 썸네일은 100% 마무리하고, 만들어진 구도중 몇가지를 골라 배경디자인과 스타일디자인을 다음 주중에 완료해볼 생각이에요.
