Hes not a descendant of that guy. The point of the storyline rn is to make her (man wol/IU) feel like its that guy from her past but he isnt at all. The more she starts to like him and have feelings for him, her heart softens abit which makes her less cold and allows the tree to grow. That was part of why mago sent him to her if that makes sense. You'll understand towards the end i was confused and thought the exact same as you when i first watched it so dont worry😂😂😭

Also the reason why shes nervous about the tree blooming flowers, is not that shes scared of growing old, bc thats not the purpose of the tree, but its because just like the other ghosts in the hotel who dont leave straightaway when they have an unresolved grudge, she also has one too and she refuses to allow herself to soften up and allow herself to leave to the afterlife before she resolves what she needs to resolve. Tried my best to explain it without giving pspoilers :)
