Re: cell reception, there is definitely a large amount of the land area in the US where it's poor or nonexistent, especially in the west. I'm from the east coast and I'm used to it being pretty much omnipresent even if it might be slow and unreliable in more rural areas, but when I visited the Grand Canyon I didn't have a signal for much of the drive from Phoenix to the canyon and had to rely on the maps downloaded to my phone ahead of time.
