Do you have a source for the quote that the RSV translators acknowledged the mistranslation? I know the word was changed in translation, but having a citation to show people would be very handy in future interactions.

It was written by Ed Oxford, who is a theologian specializing in the history of biblical translations, so while it is an opinionated blog piece rather than a peer-reviewed research paper, the guy seems like a trustworthy source on the matter. Though the fact that he is a gay Christian means he definitely has a bias in this particular case.
