Holy shit Rhino!! I didn’t think anybody else had ever noticed how squirrels have improved at dodging cars! I am 53. I remember as a kid in the 1970s how the roads in Tallahassee were littered with squirrel carcasses. It’s a lot less today. I have attributed this to evolutionary psychology working quickly over a period of decades—although it could possibly be learning by observation and some kind of generational “teaching,” I guess. I think it’s in the DNA though. I’m so happy you’ve noticed this too!

An alternative explanation is that the public works department does a better job of cleaning up. Either the public works department or natural scavengers.

Squirrels showing better evasion of vehicles isn't the first thing I think about. The size of most squirrels in my yard have decreased dramatically in size the last few years. All year long see squirrels that look like juveniles. Now that it was mentioned, I don't see as many that have been hit by vehicles or that I have to try as hard to avoid running them over.
