You said something wro-o-ong. ;-) 1. Not "the mammals" survived the meteorite, just a few individuals and lines did. As did some of the dinosaurs (birds), but it seems even fewer individuals and lines, and those were just that little bit more specialised, that they found it harder than the more malleable mammals to colonise all those newly opened niches. 2. Matt would still be an ape if he lost all of his brains. As Aron Ra says: You don't grow out of your clade. But Matt certainly tries (losing the brain, nor growing out of apedom)
